Hermeus is an aerospace and defense technology company founded to radically accelerate air travel by delivering hypersonic aircraft. The company aims to develop hypersonic aircraft quickly and cost-effectively by integrating hardware-rich, iterative development with modern computing and autonomy. This approach has been validated through design, build, and test of the company’s first combined turbojet-ramjet engine and is now being scaled through its first flight vehicle program, Quarterhorse. Hermeus is also developing Darkhorse — an uncrewed hypersonic aircraft designed to deliver unique asymmetric capabilities to the warfighter.
Hermeus is seeking a Senior Aerothermal Engineer to support the development of our hypersonic aircraft programs. As an Aerothermal Engineer, you will play a crucial role in designing, analyzing, and optimizing the thermal performance of our hypersonic vehicles and propulsion systems. Your expertise will contribute to advancing cutting-edge technologies and enabling revolutionary aerospace capabilities. This individual will work closely with the thermal team, and interface with the fluids systems, propulsion, and structures teams.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive thermal analysis and simulations to ensure the optimal performance of hypersonic vehicles and propulsion systems.
  • Design and develop innovative thermal management systems to handle extreme temperatures encountered during hypersonic flight.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate thermal solutions seamlessly into the overall vehicle design.
  • Perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and analysis to assess aerodynamic effects on thermal properties.
  • Analyze test data from thermal experiments and flight tests to validate and improve thermal models and simulations.
  • Identify potential thermal-related issues and develop proactive mitigation strategies to enhance vehicle reliability and safety.
  • Optimize heat shielding and thermal protection materials to withstand high-speed flight conditions.
  • Conduct research on emerging thermal technologies and propose their implementation for future projects.
  • Support the development of thermal test plans and contribute to the execution of thermal testing campaigns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in thermal analysis and design within the aerospace or hypersonic industry.
  • Proficiency in using CFD software and other relevant engineering tools for thermal simulations.
  • Strong knowledge of aerodynamics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics principles.
  • Familiarity with thermal protection systems (TPS) and thermal management technologies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to challenges.
  • Detail-oriented with a keen eye for accuracy in analysis and design.
  • Strong communication skills to convey technical concepts effectively.

Desired Multipliers:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in compressible fluid dynamics
  • Experience in fast-paced design environment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Security Clearance.
