Coordinator of Disability Resources

POSITION OVERVIEW:


Coordinates and provides accessibility and support services to students with disabilities. Develops and implements strategies to ensure and improve accessibility on campus, supports students with disabilities; provides resources, training, and consultation to faculty and staff; supervises the work of part-time, intern, or vendor service providers; and performs related work as required.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Coordinates the approval and implementation of reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities per disability laws (i.e. note-taking accommodations, exam accommodations, CART, sign language interpreting, and other accommodations)

  • Conducts intake interviews with students seeking accommodations to determine eligibility and to assess their accessibility needs
  • Review medical documentation to verify the disability and need for reasonable accommodation(s)
  • Works with the Associate Director and Disability Resources staff to advise prospective and current students, faculty, and staff of SVA’s support services for students with disabilities and disability accommodations
  • Regularly meets with students individually to provide coaching and support to mitigate challenges related to disability (time management, communication, stress management, planning, organizing, prioritizing, etc.)

  • Refers students to appropriate SVA resources (Student Health and Counseling, Writing Resource Center, etc.)
  • Provides faculty and staff with appropriate information, training, and resources to implement or improve accessibility and support for students with disabilities

  • Facilitates student support groups (i.e. Socialization group, Learning Disabilities Group, etc.)
  • Schedules and coordinates exam accommodations, including proctoring exams when necessary.
  • Stays informed about the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and related law and OCR or DOJ rulings as they pertain to higher education and students with disabilities.
  • Researches new assistive technologies and overall best practices and attends related training
  • Develops and maintains communication with academic advisors, faculty, staff, and department chairs
  • Assists the Associate Director in recruiting, scheduling, and supervising part-time or intern service providers. (ex. counseling/disability interns, student workers, vendors providing interpreting/CART services etc.)
  • Performs administrative duties according to program guidelines: (ex. case notes, chart review, e-mail and phone interactions, obtaining and providing training, social media updates, outreach to students on leave, etc.)
  • Works in conjunction with the Associate Director and DR Staff to coordinate all aspects of service delivery provided by Disability Resources

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Disability Services, Education, or similar counseling field.
  • Certification or Licensure (where applicable) is preferred. (ex. CRC, LMHC, LMSW, LCSW, etc.)
  • At least two years of experience working with individuals with disabilities in an educational or vocational setting.
  • Strong knowledge of disability law including the American Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
  • Prior work experience within higher education is preferred.
  • Ability to multitask, self-motivate, and self-initiate tasks.
  • Strong English writing and verbal skills. (bi/multi-lingual is a plus)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Background or prior education in art is a plus.
