Description
BW Energy is currently in search of a Drilling Engineer to join our team in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Drilling Engineer has the following responsibilities and key tasks related to BW Energy’s (BWE) operation in Brazil:
- Design, plan, and engineer wells in preparation for the execution of the wells.
- Prepare cost estimates and budgets to support the generation of Well AFE’s.
- Provide supervisory and technical support to the Rig Superintendent during drilling operations, onsite supervision if required.
- Liaise and manage daily interface between wells, subsurface, and operations.
- Final well closeout and reporting at the conclusion of the well.
- Prepare and present well design concepts based on information provided by Subsurface team.
- Assist with the preparation of cost estimates used to generate yearly Budgets and well/project specific AFE's and track during operations.
- Forecast and accountable for the timely ordering of well/project specific Long Lead requirements.
- Contribute towards logistical coordination & quality assurance of services, materials, equipment and personnel.
- Integrate with fellow drilling, completion/testing, subsea, and/or subsurface team members as required.
- Perform special studies/duties if/as required, including conducting service quality meetings.
- Ensure Vendor service deficiencies are correctly and timely captured via the Company non-conformance reporting (NCR) process so as to ensure timely action/close out.
- Support NCR and root cause failure analysis as required.
- Contributor to the development, management, and updating of the Drilling Management System (DMS).
- Ensure the DMS is followed during well planning, design, engineering, and execution and closeout activities.
- Ensure compliance with Company and Drilling & Completion policies, standards, and approved procedures.
- Ensure compliance of Vendor supplied materials, equipment, and services which includes the review of design, pre-assembly verification, pre-installation testing, and equipment documentation.
- Support the preparation of HSE documents if/where required.
- Contribute and participate in the hazard identification process.
- Contribute and participate in well/project specific risk assessments and pre-job planning meetings.
- Assist with the evaluation of rig and 3rd party services for hazards, well integrity, and assurance.
- Support Drilling Management if requested in ER roles and incident investigations.
- Provide engineering support as part of the wells team, which includes optimizing well planning, design, engineering, costing, and assisting with operation execution, as well as the services associated with these activities. Activities include performing offset reviews & well hazard identification.
- Establish subsurface well/project life cycle functional and operational requirements, including material & equipment selection.
- Identify special Engineering Studies to be performed.
- Prepare well/project specific technical notes if/when required.
- Prepare detailed scopes of work for tender documents, perform vendor capability assessments, evaluate tenders methodically, and capable of presenting a succinct recommendation.
- Raise Requisitions & Purchase Orders.
- Ensure compliance of Vendor supplied goods, materials, equipment, and services which includes but is not limited to the review of design, manufacturing processes, quality plans, post-manufacturing testing/verification, site receipt acceptance, pre-assembly verification, pre-installation testing, and equipment documentation.
- Review all applicable operating, installing & testing procedures, including interface documents.
- Assist with drilling-related engineering, mobilization, installation, and commissioning activities if/when required.
- Contribute and participate in DWOP/CWOP/TWOP's as part of well/project commencement.
- Ensure the Well Barrier Schematic is current and valid for the current operation being performed.
- Assist with the preparation of Management of Change (MOC) documents and conducting a risk assessment for those changes with relevant parties.
- Review field tickets and/or well invoices.
- Review the engineering-focused After Action Review (AAR) report and apply lessons learned.
- Responsible for the compilation of End of well Reports (EOWRs).
Requirements
Education:
- Degree qualification in Engineering.
- Good written and oral command of the English Language.
- Current Well Control certification (IWCF) - Subsea/Surface Supervisor is considered an advantage.
Experience:
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant Drilling engineering experience, ideally with an Operator.
- Experience with deepwater and shallow water horizontal wells in Brazil is considered an advantage.
- Familiarity with well intervention and abandonment is desirable.

Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project).
- Good understanding of Brazilian regulations.
- Knowledge of drilling equipment design and operation.
- Knowledge of appropriate and relevant well engineering tools (e.g. Landmark Suite or similar – Wellplan, Stresscheck, Compass, etc.) and software packages.
