REGENT is building the seaglider; the first electric flying machine that will transport commercial passengers. With a vehicle that never flies higher than a few meters off the water, we unlock the ability to fly twice as far as an electric aircraft, and certification by maritime authorities which will let us fly first passengers by mid-decade.
We are backed by the world’s best investors: the same investors who are behind SpaceX, Anduril, and Boom Supersonic, in addition to strategic investors like Lockheed Martin, Japan Airlines, and Hawaiian Airlines. We have over $8B in orders from some of the industry’s largest operators and are hard at work getting our full-scale, human-carrying prototype on the water next year. As a Senior Electric Propulsion Engineer at REGENT, your primary objective will be to support propulsion system testing and integration.
You will support design verification and acceptance testing of primary propulsion components and systems such as EPUs (Electric Propulsion Units) comprised of motors, power electronics and propellers, power distribution components and energy storage systems. You will help develop test plans and processes as well as reduce data and document results to provide verification and validation artifacts, ultimately supporting vehicle integration and the safe operation and testing of the our first full scale seaglider. Candidates should be eager to provide hands on contribution to the assembly of components, execution of tests and integration of these systems into the vehicle. This role requires skills that can support all aspects of design, fabrication and assembly across disciplines such as mechanical, electrical and software engineering. Prior experience with high power and high voltage systems is required.
We are looking for candidates who fully understand how to effectively and safely test test both high voltage electrical systems and high powered rotating machinery. This role may evolve into a leadership position in which candidates may ultimately become responsible for future iterations, assessment and development of propulsion system components or subsystems. This role will require working across multiple disciplines and along side engineers and techs from a variety of backgrounds spanning aerospace, maritime and automotive.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- As a Senior Electric Propulsion Engineer, you will primarily support integration and testing of the major propulsion system elements including the energy storage system, power distribution, and EPU (Electric Propulsion Unit) components
- This role will require an electromechanical, multidisciplinary experience base and although the primary focus will be integration and test support, candidates should be experienced in the entire prototype development cycle from concept design and analysis through fabrication, integration and test
- Candidates will support the development of test setups, test plans and data reduction to complete design verification, validation and acceptance of the propulsion system from end to end
- In this role you will interface with key vendors to continue to develop future iterations of the existing propulsion system while also supporting continued assessment of future technology and alternate sourcing options for various components
- This role will require the ability to write detailed specifications, define acceptance criteria and work closely with vendors to support development
- Additionally, you will support the design, analysis, fabrication and integration of other peripheral propulsion system components used on our full scale seaglider prototype
- This role requires self-motivated individuals willing to embrace tasks for which they have a depth of experience as well as those that will require on the job training/education
- You will work closely with various engineering disciplines and technicians and must have an understanding and appreciation for requirements management, engineering processes, interface development and communication and analytical model development
- This role may evolve into a leadership role and progress to support future product development
- Travel will be required, approximately 10-25%
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- BS in Engineering, minimum 7 years of applicable experience in aerospace
- Experience using MATLAB/Simulink, Python or other programming tools for varying purposes ranging from data reduction to analysis/simulation
- Experience with energy storage systems such as Lithium-Polymer or Lithium-Ion batteries
- Experience with high-power electronics and the basic principles of electric motors and drives
- Solid foundation in fundamentals of electrical engineering, static and mechanics, and thermodynamic principles
- Familiar with writing test plans and reports and conducting tests for mechanical and electrical components
- Familiarity with high voltage systems
- Familiarity with propellers and rotor design, fabrication, and testing
- Hands-on experience and familiarity with shop tools and their proper use as well as best practices regarding the assembly of mechanical and electrical hardware
- Strong organization and communication skills, willingness to learn and teach
- Biased towards action while maintaining a focus on safety and quality
Desired Qualifications and Skills:
- MS in Mechanical, Electrical or Aerospace Engineering
- Prototyping and production manufacturing experience
- FAA pilot’s license or boating/sailing experience
- Experience with a CAD package such as CATIA, NX or Solidworks, NX
