Procon Consulting, a fast-growing professional services firm in McLean, VA with expertise in construction management (CM), construction-related technology, space planning, and facilities management, seeks an onsite Mechanical Engineer in the Norfolk, VA area to prepare design documents and/or scopes of work for A/E services, Design/Build services and construction work. Provide decisive guidance and direction regarding the management of technical aspects of engineering related to building structures. Responsible for the overall management, in terms of technical quality, cost and schedule.
Procon Consulting operates as an owner's representative throughout the United States for government construction projects. We specialize in capital improvement projects in government construction & engineering. All candidates must meet the following skills and qualifications:

Qualifications & Skills


  • BS in mechanical engineering / mechanical engineering technology or closely related discipline from an ABET accredited institution is required.
  • Thorough understanding of design criteria such as American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning (ASHRAE), National Electrical Code (NEC), and other engineering standards and building codes.
  • Possess strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with all University stakeholders.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with ability to maintain databases as required.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare mechanical designs including engineering calculations and preparation of plans and specifications. 
  • Demonstrated ability to use Computer Aided Design software such as AutoCAD and/or Revit.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate graphically and verbally with designers, engineers, contractors and shop mechanics and electricians.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage numerous construction projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and project a professional image at all times.
  • Licensed in Virginia as a Professional Engineer, or licensed in another state and able to obtain Virginia licensure within 12 months of employment or Project Management Professional (PMP) preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.
  • Experience in managing complex design and construction projects.
  • Experience working in scheduling software such as Primavera or MS Project.
  • Experience working in web-based project management software such as eBuilder, PCS or Co-Construct.
  • 40 Hour OSHA Training Course.
  • Experience interacting with code officials in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Working proficiency in a range of Microsoft Office products including PowerPoint and Project.

Responsibilities & Duties


  • The mechanical engineer, a member of the Facilities Engineering Group, provides designs, analyses, project management and inspections and condition assessments.
  • Mechanical designs for minor renovations and HVAC projects including power and control systems.
  • Design to include calculations, code analysis, preparation of sketches/ drawings, etc.
  • This position will also be responsible for managing various design and construction projects as assigned along with assisting with facilities inspections and condition assessment.
  • Prepares designs including engineering calculations, plans and specifications for minor construction and HVAC projects in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Responsible for design of mechanical equipment, facilities and utilities that serve the University.
  • The mechanical engineer is responsible for interpreting, organizing, executing and coordinating assignments and managing projects.
  • Performs inspections of facilities and produces inspection reports and repair recommendations.
  • Manage multiple Maintenance Reserve and other campus projects to include construction, renovation and replacement of building and/ or utility systems.
  • Examines and approves engineering and architectural drawings and design computations for buildings and/or utility systems to ensure compliance with sound engineering practices and established standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Conducts preliminary surveys and prepares schematic, preliminary, and work drawings for the construction, renovation and replacement of building and/ or utility systems.
  • Responsible for managing all aspects of the project to include project planning, design and construction to ensure it meets expected cost and schedule requirements.
  • Conducts periodic inspections of work in progress and advises construction supervisors and contractors on interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Inspects materials, workmanship, and architectural, mechanical and electrical installations for conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Ensure coordination with customers and building occupants to keep all interested parties informed of the project’s scope, schedule and impact on campus operations.
