Position and Responsibilities Overview:


Masterworks has become a significant player in the market, with a collection of over 400 paintings valued at over $1bn. We are looking for a Senior Valuations Specialist with extensive experience advising and valuing blue-chip Post-War and Contemporary Art. This role will join our Valuations Team as a senior member reporting to the Head of Valuations.You will:

  • Advise Acquisitions Specialists with market-informed valuation opinions for artwork being considered for acquisition
  • Be a senior contributor to our acquisitions valuation process managed by our Head of Appraisals
  • Gather market intelligence through regular interactions with auction houses, galleries, dealers, and advisors as it relates to factors that affect the valuations of artists in the Masterworks portfolio or target artist markets
  • Be a senior member of our Valuations Committee, contributing to quarterly appraisals of all artwork in the Masterworks portfolio

The ideal you:


  • You have 10+ years of experience at a major auction house, gallery, or advisory group
  • You have deep knowledge of the market for high-value contemporary art
  • You have extensive experience working with clients through purchases and sales, at auction and privately
  • You can quickly arrive at valuation opinions supported by data and market intelligence
  • You are comfortable making decisions amid uncertainty
  • You are highly analytical, data-driven, discrete, and highly organized
  • Fast learner with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • USPAP Certification required

Success in the first 90 days looks like:


  • Contribute to daily pricing sessions for hundreds of paintings
  • Accelerate time from receipt to valuation to 24 hours for all potential acquisitions
  • Get fully up to speed on Masterworks’ current portfolio and target artist markets

Additional Requirements:


  • Must be able to work in the NYC office.
  • Must be eligible to work in the US - no exceptions.
  • Must be available to work full-time

How does Masterworks think about compensation?


The compensation range for the role is $100-200k (inclusive only of base salary, and exclusive of other potential competitive benefits such as on-target commission, bonus payments, and equity). Our ranges are very broad to accommodate all types of candidates and encourage growth. Specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on factors such as education, experience, qualifications, and alignment with market data. Exceptional candidates may receive salaries outside of the posted ranges.
