Stage Management Instructor


The Duke Ellington School of the Arts seeks a 10-month Instructor in the Stage Management concentration. The successful applicant will join the faculty as the school’s Stage Management Teacher. The incumbent will work closely with the department chair, department faculty Producing Director/Senior Lecturer in Stage Management, and all artistic and production team members in mentoring the management students through the production and stage management processes within a vibrant educational performance season.

The Stage Management Instructor will contribute as an educator in the stage management curriculum while mentoring 8-10+ high school student stage managers during an active production season. The school’s 10-month Production schedule has historically included 2 theatre productions, 3 dance productions, 2 to 4 lightly produced student showcases, 2 instrumental performances, 4 vocal music productions to include an Opera workshop, an all-school musical, and a host of other third party events over a 10-month production calendar. The Stage Management instructor will be an effective mentor who balances the demands of production with pedagogical realities and navigates complex channels of communication between faculty choreographers and directors, faculty design mentors, faculty and staff production/technology specialists, guest artists, students in design and production roles, and student performers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


• Function as Stage Management Instructor for the school’s various productions, overseeing and mentoring students as stage managers and assistant stage managers through all phases of the production process.• Function as the Stage Management Instructor for 8-10+ productions per year• Embed principles of pluralism, curiosity, open intellectual discourse, and the well-being of all in the context of cultural and ideological differences in all aspects of production processes• Teach 2-4 courses per semester, including shared instruction in Introduction to Stage Management and advanced and senior-level courses.• Share responsibilities of attending and overseeing technical rehearsals, additional critical rehearsals, and meetings with the school’s Production Manager.• Occasional facilitation of regular production meetings• Serve on School committees and working groups as assigned.• Contribute to recruitment efforts for the school’s Technical Design and Production Program.• High school diploma or GED; at least 6 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:


• MFA in stage management, or closely related field, or an equivalent combination of professional experiences and skills.• Experience in teaching and/or mentoring at the high school level. • Evidence of success in promoting an environment that advances pluralism, curiosity, open intellectual discourse, and the well-being of all in the context of cultural and ideological differences.• Strong organizational, management, and communication skills• Three or more years as a stage manager in a professional setting• Demonstrated consistent success working in an environment that advances pluralism, curiosity, open intellectual discourse, and the well-being of all in the context of cultural and ideological differences.• Demonstrated commitment to education as a vehicle for personal and social transformation.• Evidence of a commitment to emerging technologies and innovative practices.
