The Company

MetOx Technologies, Inc. has a state-of-the-art facility located in Northwest Houston, TX.  MetOx Technologies, Inc. (MetOx) is a Houston-based manufacturer of High Temperature Superconducting wire (HTS), and a world leader in HTS technology.  Developed over the last decade, MetOx’s proprietary manufacturing technology for rapid scale up of commercial HTS production will be commissioning in mid-2023.  MetOx is committed to empowering our sustainable energy future.

The Purpose

The Senior Mechanical Engineer is a collaborative role that is primary in the MOCVD system which is critical to the company manufacturing. This role will modify existing systems and create applications and processes. They utilize technical knowledge to research and develop future systems that with increased efficiency, throughput, and performance.

The Position

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will provide on-time delivery in a fast-paced environment. They will be responsible for setting design requirements based on feedback from other partners and manufacturing requirements. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will work in a cross functional team (Process, Technology, and Operations) to produce an outcome for the MOCVD design.

The Duties

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be part of an innovative team to improve products and processes with the tool.  They will use 3D CAD packages to design the tool and generate detailed 2D drawings for part fabrication.  They develop new design concepts and modify the design process to support the functions below:

Essential Support Functions

  • Design MOCVD reactors and systems for HTS wire manufacturing.
  • Use CAD packages to create 3D CAD models.
  • Analyze and evaluate CAD design using simulation software.
  • Build and test concept designs.
  • Evaluate the performance of complex design concepts for optimized Mechanical design (stress, strain, deflections, safety factor) and for reactor conditions (gas flow, temperature, vacuum, deposition).

The Responsibilities

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will create models and detailed 2D machine drawings for various machines that will be converted into working structures. They will carefully follow the project objectives and execute the project plans and models as well as the responsibilities below:

  • Design the reactor and the internal components of the reactor for vacuum applications and processes.
  • Design MOCVD systems requiring technical understanding and experience in low pressure gas flows, heat transfer, Semiconductor CVD reactor design, simulation packages including CFD and FEA, mechanical design of precision and Semiconductor parts, part tolerancing, GT&D, part assembly drawings, and manufacturing assembly and design records documentation.
  • Managing vendors designs and developing schedules, resolve vendor design or material issues, communicate vendor issues with clarity to the head of engineering, propose alternatives to prevent project delays.
  • 2D detailed machine drawings with accurate design tolerances ready for CNC machining
  • Owns the tool design, reviews requests for design changes and provides feedback, evaluates request for design changes and works with engineering head and cross-functional teams to provide solutions.
  • Leads all tool designs or performance related design reviews and follows up with action items and design decisions.
  • Performs simulation and modeling; CFD and FEA to optimize the design.
  • Work with different groups to gather process and hardware requirements and gain feedback on design logic.
  • Proposes mockup tests, builds the test platform, and performs the tests to understand and validate high risk and unknown designs.

The Qualifications

The Senior Mechanical Engineer must have the following minimum qualifications to be initially considered for the position

  • Mechanical, Chemical, or Physics degree
  • Minimum five years of experience designing complex systems
  • Extensive experience with 3D CAD part and assembly design
  • Extensive experience converting 3D CAD models into 2D detailed fabrication drawings with tolerances
  • Strong vacuum conductance design, gas flow, heat transfer, radiation heat transfer and modeling, Semiconductor CVD/MOCVD reactor design, CFD & FEA experience
  • Great conflict resolution and on-time delivery
  • Mechanical design expertise
  • Advanced level in SolidWorks preferred
  • Roll-to-Roll systems design expertise preferred
  • Strong experience in designing high temperature low pressure Roll-to-Roll CVD or MOCVD reactors and systems preferred
