We are looking for a Content Director who can lead the development of engaging and informative content focused on bringing genetics and prevention to the healthcare conversation. This includes medical conditions, treatments, healthcare technology, wellness, and lifestyle. This Director will work with other organizations within the company (Communications, Marketing, Social, Product, Product Science, Research, UX Writers, and others), to develop a steady flow of compelling content that can fuel consumer attention and curiosity. Genetics is a rapidly evolving field with new information coming out every day, so staying up to date and being able to parse out the most meaningful and relevant insights and translating them into consumer understandable and engaging content while maintaining 23andMe’s scientific integrity and position in the healthcare space is key. The Content Director will work with a cross-functional group of strategists and writers to envision and produce concepts, content plans, and written output that can be distributed in various channels and products to drive acquisition, engagement, retention and overall enthusiasm for the 23andMe brand.
We are a dynamic brand on a mission to change health care, and we want to find someone with a passion to help us tell this story - communicating the power of genetics to improve people’s lives - all in an accessible and relatable way.
Who We Are
Since 2006, 23andMe’s mission has been to help people access, understand, and benefit from the human genome. We are a group of passionate individuals pushing the boundaries of what’s possible to help turn genetic insight into better health and personal understanding.
What You'll Do
- Oversee content creation that educates, informs, and engages consumers. Manage full cycle process from concepts to production to implementation to measurement and monitoring.
- Serve as a knowledgeable spokesperson on healthcare topics relevant to the products and services offered by the organization. Maintain a professional and credible presence across various communication channels, including social media, conferences, and industry events.
- Create and manage content strategies and plans that deliver on key brand goals and needs. Produce high quality, compelling and accurate output in support of projects and plans.
- Identify trends and short-term opportunities where the brand can add to the cultural conversation in a timely manner with our unique point of view. Stay informed on new trends and best practices in healthcare and wellness. Be nimble, in an intentional and efficient way.
- Establish and organize longer term goals, themes, and content roadmaps, ensuring that all work ladders up to the company mission, product roadmap, and the brand strategy.
- Work with internal clinical experts and scientists in the company to identify future content for the content pipeline and ensure that all content is based on the best science (we lead with science).
- Ensure "DEI by design" -- that our content strategy is formed with diversity, equity and inclusion in mind, and content planning and development considers DEI throughout the process.
- Monitor and review competitor content and market trends to inspire new content and strategy updates.
What You’ll Bring
- 8+ years experience in content creation or editorial work, specifically in the healthcare space. Clinical or clinical research background (MD or similar) strongly preferred.
- You have creative vision and have strong results to show for your work (a portfolio that includes consumer-facing work).
- You are highly collaborative. You like to work with other people. You love to really understand their needs in order to build the best plan possible for them, as well as for the company and brand more broadly.
- You have strong credibility in the areas of preventive health, etc. as a thought leader.
- You are a strong storyteller and can see the big picture, as well as drill down to a single piece of content and see how it ladders back up.
- You have previous experience managing and developing talent -- whether on your team or with external resources (agency, freelancers, etc.).
- You have excellent writing and editing skills, and are good at giving and receiving feedback constructively.
- You are able to handle and support change, including the ability to "disagree and commit." You are nimble and thrive in a busy, sometimes unstructured environment.
- You are a curious person who loves to understand why and how things work. You like to be the first to know about something and then you’re excited to tell lots of people about what you’ve learned - making it easy for them to understand something complex.
- You can see the big picture (brand storytelling), as well as drill down to a single piece of content and see how it ladders back up. You can see the forest through the trees.
- You are a natural leader and have previous experience managing talent - whether on your team or with external resources (agency, freelancers, etc.).
- You have strong project management skills to see projects through from inception to execution.
- You are organized and can prioritize tasks. You communicate well and manage expectations.
- You love to stay on top of the trends and “look around” to see what other people are doing. You are inspired and can translate big ideas into executable ideas for your business.
- You want to make a difference in the world by helping people live longer and better.
- You want to have fun while doing your work and letting that shine through in your work.
