About the role and the team

We’re launching our new drone delivery hardware and software to partners in the medical, retail and food industries this year. Within Zipline, the Customer Platform team designs the experiences at the heart of the service.

  • On the one hand, the apps consumers use to place and track orders
  • And on the other, a suite of tools used by our partners to integrate Zipline into their food, retail or healthcare services.

The latter is really the engine that powers our service, and the focus of this job. You’ll be leading the design of our products across the different touchpoints of our partner ecosystem:

  • A desktop app for business owners to manage their users, sites, drones and access controls
  • A tablet and mobile app for business to manage and fulfill Zipline orders
  • A tablet and mobile app for interfacing with Zipline hardware and kicking off flight missions
  • A suite of internal inventory and warehouse management tools for operators and customer care agents

This is a complex ecosystem of products at varying levels of maturity, for partners of varying scales who operate in different industries. It’s an ecosystem rife with edge cases, dependencies, and real-world constraints.

What You'll Do

We’re a small product team which allows us to move exceptionally fast and with very little waste — but this is a large surface area and you’ll have the support of your manager to share some of the workload.

  • Advocate for exceptional experiences in designing our ecosystem of partner products that are in their infancy or don’t yet exist.
  • Modernize our current tools in Rwanda and integrate them into the new partner ecosystem.
  • Own the end to end design of screens, patterns, components and prototypes for the products you work on.
  • Use a variety of visual tools to help your team disambiguate the complexity of the content area, ranging from customer journey maps to low fidelity mocks to flow diagrams.
  • Help coordinate and participate in research missions and user testing sessions to give your team confidence about what they’re building.
  • Build an empathetic relationship with the developers to set each-other up for success, find opportunities in each others’ constraints, and push each other to raise the quality bar.
  • Work with a copy writer and brand designer to dial-in the feel of our design system.
  • As a member of a nascent design team you’ll work with your manager on shaping the team’s process, artifacts and culture.

What You'll Bring

You’re good natured, humble and highly collaborative — you believe that curiosity, love of craft, knowing how to prioritize, and building meaningful relationships are key to your success.

  • You have 9+ years as a UX or product designer.
  • You love working on complex systems, but more importantly, you love simplifying them — both for your end-users and your teammates.
  • You’ve worked on desktop based, workflow-driven products, seeing them from conception through to implementation, and have some experience in mobile.
  • You’ve worked on digital products that have offline dependencies (such as service down-time, inventory status, user's proximity to a device) — ideally you’ve worked on software connected to a piece of hardware.
  • You have a wide range of tools you use to help your team understand and protect the user experience, such as customer journey maps, card sorts and flow diagrams.
  • You understand what fidelity to work at when, from low fidelity prototypes, to developer ready screen flows, to lovingly crafted micro interactions.
  • You’ve made meaningful contributions to a design system, or at the very least worked with one.
  • Our product is in its infancy — projects and priorities will change and you’re OK with this.
  • You can empathize with both external and internal users, and are able to travel for short research trips.
