ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.
We’re looking for our first audience data and insights manager, someone who can be a strategic and analytical collaborator and who can generate actionable data insights to guide the organization’s efforts. This person will help us measure what matters and will use data analysis and some engineering skills to surface the insights and opportunities that will make their colleagues’ work stronger and advance ProPublica’s mission. This role reports jointly to the director of audience strategy and the chief product and brand officer.
This position will work across ProPublica’s newsroom and cross-functional product teams and present regularly to the organization’s leadership.
What you’ll do:
- Develop a robust understanding of our readers and potential readers, including their behaviors and attributes, to help refine editorial and traffic approaches.
- Implement measurable strategies that reflect a deep understanding of the organization’s operations and objectives.
- Provide stakeholders at all levels with informed, data-driven recommendations, forecasts and decisions supported by comprehensive analysis.
- Collaborate with product engineers, designers and product managers to produce dashboards and automated reports that highlight key performance metrics.
- Work with engineering leadership to continuously improve data and analytics systems and capabilities.
- Support the design and evaluation of A/B and multivariate tests to optimize audience engagement and content performance.
- Keep pace with industry trends and advancements in data analytics and audience research tools and methodologies.
About you:
- Two or more years of professional experience working in data analytics, marketing or product analytics. Experience with editorial operations is a significant plus.
- Advanced proficiency with SQL, preferably within BigQuery or similar cloud environments, and experience with using dashboarding tools such as Looker, Tableau, Mode, etc. to present insights.
- Experience with standard analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Parse.ly, Adobe Analytics) and, preferably, measurement across channels, including search, social media and email.
- Expertise in digital publishing metrics and a thorough understanding of developing and measuring effective content promotion and publishing strategies.
- Experience using Python or R for data analysis is a plus.
- An independent, motivated and nimble individual who is comfortable navigating ambiguity and working across teams. A strong and effective communicator who can present complex ideas in straightforward ways. Someone who approaches the work with curiosity and a learning mindset.
This role is open to remote candidates or hybrid work from ProPublica’s headquarters in New York City. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. The expected salary for this position is $95,000 to $115,000.This is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay. The final wage will take into account a person’s experience, accomplishment and location.
