Biotechnology is rewriting life as we know it, from the medicines we take, to the crops we grow, the materials we wear, and the household goods that we rely on every day. But moving at the new speed of science requires better technology.
Benchling’s mission is to unlock the power of biotechnology. The world’s most innovative biotech companies use Benchling’s R&D Cloud to power the development of breakthrough products and accelerate time to milestone and market. Come help us bring modern software to modern science.
ROLE OVERVIEW
The richness and variety of our customers’ work means that Benchling cannot ship out-of-the-box support for all the concepts in biotech. The Schemas team, essential to our Data Platform, aims to adapt Benchling’s structure to match the various scientific concepts our customers work with. By allowing our internal Application teams to introduce new “schema types,” which are natively integrated with our Platform, customers can directly augment and extend these schemas to represent their unique science.
As an engineer on the Schemas team, you will own the evolution of these customizable schemas, ensure optimal handling of data “at rest”, allowing focussed attention to shaping the data within Schemas for high integrity and optimal performance of the datastore that backs all data records in the Benchling Data Platform.Schemas is a key leverage-point for both our internal Application teams and external customers, simultaneously underpinning most of the company’s work but ripe for re-architecture. As a leader on this team, you should be passionate about the team’s execution, balancing individual output alongside fostering a culture of accountability and execution excellence. You will partner with teams across Platform and Applications to ensure we’re solving the right problems and making the right tradeoffs between leverage and time-to-value.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Re-architect the Schemas system so customers can iterate on their schemas at scale, reliably offering async data migrations over billions of records with zero-downtime while maintaining our data integrity guarantees. As customers’ science evolves, they need the ability to evolve their schema types accordingly and at any data scale.
- Develop and build a robust versioning system for schemas, ensuring accurate representation and management of customer data models over time. This enables our customers to configure Benchling for their particular use-cases, making the scientist/operator experience feel tailored and seamless.
- Design and build foundational schema type primitives – such as inheritance support, performant uniqueness constraints or filterable fields – so that customers can model their concepts in high fidelity.
- Rethink how Application teams build on top of the Schemas platform, driving down the engineering effort required from multiple months to a few weeks. Given Benchling’s large and rapidly growing product surface area, Schemas is a unique leverage point for internal engineering velocity and interoperability.
- Actively engage with product managers and designers to promote transparent communication and shared understanding, thereby playing a pivotal role in actively identifying opportunities for improvement and optimizing product requirements.
- Lead team-wide or project-specific rituals, helping the team deliver on commitments and contributing to a culture of execution excellence.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Thrive in a collaborative and diverse environment involving different stakeholders and experts.
- 4+ years of experience as a software engineer, ideally 1+ of those within a Platform team.
- Have strong abilities in problem solving and iterating on feedback.
- Enjoy ownership and building key pieces of product and platform.
- Proven track record of planning, leading and delivering multi-quarter, multi-person projects, all the while leading the project management and necessary stakeholder communications.
- Eagerness to dive into deep technical complexity and “repair the plane while we fly it.”
- Have a keen interest in delving deeper into life science. While prior knowledge isn’t a pre-requisite, an enthusiasm to learn certainly is.
