Context for this position
- Malt is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to conduct and contribute to research on the topics of online biases and discrimination. The research will bring actionable insights and guide the company’s decisions
- It is well established that there are risks of biases and discriminations in traditional and online labor markets, coming from algorithms, humans, and market design (among other sources). As the European leader in freelancing, Malt has a responsibility to identify such cases and mitigate them.
- The objective of the researcher will be to assess whether there are outcome and opportunity gaps between freelancers from different demographics and, if there are, identify their sources. The researcher will also propose and test solutions - offline through counterfactual analysis and/or online through randomized experiments.
- The researcher will be part of the data team, an international team with about 30 members with a variety of profiles, including 6 PhDs (in economics, computer science, and environmental sciences).
Key responsibilities
- The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible both for interfacing with Malt’s academic partners and for conducting research internally. We want to emphasize that this is a research and development position and therefore the work goes beyond the analysis of data and production of insights. We list below examples of typical tasks
- Defining research questions, setting research plans and methodologies
- Data cleaning, processing, and analysis
- Sharing datasets, explaining the data to academic partners, inquiring internally about the sources of the data
- Setting up online experiments and surveys, and coordinating with the engineering, data science, and product teams
- Building data tools, training and evaluating models, pushing code in production, building and storing tables in our cloud
- Disseminating the results internally and externally (conferences, publications).
- Administrative tasks (eg. reporting expenses from research funds)
- This position does not incorporate independent research outside the scope of the company; any independent research would be conducted outside of regular work hours
