Job Description
Vision and Strategy:
- Stay updated on emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices to ensure the team remains innovative and competitive.
- Make sure your teams understand the concept of "partial failure" and the importance of planning for failure.
- Keep systems as simple as possible, coaching your teams to reduce the complexity of solutions wherever feasible.
- Understand how the systems you are responsible for function at a high level so you can provide effective guidance to your teams.
- Cultivate a good understanding of how your system processes fit into the larger business.
Leadership and Team Management:
- Foster a positive and inclusive work culture that promotes collaboration, creativity, and professional growth.
- Build and develop high-performing software engineering teams through effective recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, and performance management.
- Delegate tasks and responsibilities based on team members' skills and strengths, encouraging autonomy and ownership.
- Provide regular feedback, recognition, and opportunities for career advancement to motivate and retain top talent.
- Foster cross-team collaboration and communication to promote knowledge sharing and synergies.
- Attend and provide encouragement to your teams during demos.
Project Management:
- Collaborate closely with other stakeholders, such as product managers, VP’s, and business leaders, to understand project requirements and ensure successful delivery.
- Oversee project planning, resource allocation, and risk management to ensure projects are completed within scope, timeline, and budget.
- Continually review the SDLC, to improve efficiency, productivity, and quality.
- Establish and maintain effective communication channels within the team and with external stakeholders to ensure transparency and timely updates.
- Encourage your team to demo their software. Agile is about working code.
Technical Excellence and Quality Assurance:
- Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development within the team.
- Encourage engineers to enhance their skills, acquire certifications, and stay up to date with the latest technologies and industry standards.
- Promote code reviews, automated testing, and other quality assurance practices to deliver robust and high-quality software solutions.
- Establish and enforce coding standards, best practices, and documentation guidelines to ensure consistency, maintainability, and scalability.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Act as a bridge between your teams and senior management, effectively communicating the team's progress, challenges, and resource needs.
- Collaborate with directors, VPs, and the CTO to align software engineering initiatives with the broader organizational goals.
- Promote open and transparent communication within the team, fostering a culture of constructive feedback, active listening, and effective problem-solving.
Continuous Improvement:
- Regularly evaluate the team's performance, processes, and tools to identify areas for improvement and implement necessary changes.
- Encourage innovation and experimentation, allowing team members to explore new ideas and technologies.
- Utilize HR-mandated systems to set goals, track those goals and track the performance of team's members against their individual goals and the company's goals.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement, sharing lessons learned and implementing best practices across the organization.

Able to unblock team members, promote collaboration both within and between different teams to ensure team members are working effectively and they have all the tools and information they need to succeed.Able to view the "Big Picture" of how components are supposed to fit together to promote a "Fit for purpose" solution across features and projects.Able to set baseline expectations for the team such as quality, standards, compliance, behaviour, work ethics, etc.Able to manage teams and team leads effectively:
- Trust your team knows how to do their job (don't micromanage)
- Provide an environment of psychological safety (blameless post-mortems)
- Know your people (who has personality clashes, subject experts, let people play to their strengths)
- Avoid knowledge silos (get other teams to review code, promote cross domain knowledge)
- Avoid distractions - Absorb and deflect items which could distract your team
- Give them tools - Ensure developers have the tools to do their job
- Provide a fun work environment
- Reward your team for a job well done
Able to oversee the work of managers and technical leads:
- Understanding of software architecture and design (architecture patterns)
- Awareness of good coding practices (Clean Code, TDD, BDD, Refactoring Patterns, etc)
- Knowledge of Security Standards (PCI DSS, GDPR, etc)
- Familiarity with code review emphases (maintainability, side effects, performance, testability)
- Knowledge of common Design Patterns
Able to perform project management effectively (SCRUM/Agile):
- Manage backlogs, stories, grooming, refinement
- Manage deadlines and expectations to provide feedback to stakeholders
- Manage estimations and project velocity
