POSITION PURPOSE:                            

Manage a specified rig and assigned crew. Responsible for the safety of personnel & assets, and the operational and financial performance of an assigned rig while working effectively with the customer’s representative at the drilling location.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Deliver safe operations, while maintaining high levels of well integrity, asset integrity, teamwork, customer satisfaction, and good housekeeping at the rig site.
  • Execute the requirements of the ICD HSE Management System and Company Management System (to include policies, procedures, and expectations) and ensure they are in place and functioning consistently in order to achieve the goals and objectives of the Company. Provide leadership, coaching, and support as required to the Drillers and all crew members. Communicate and reinforce that everyone has the responsibility, authority, and obligation to interrupt an operation if a condition or behavior is observed which could cause harm to people, assets or the environment. The Rig Manager is expected to foster an environment where this will take place and personnel will act on this understanding as required. (Stop work authority)
  • Identify hazards in the workplace and implement sufficient controls to prevent incidents.
  • Manage all permitted activities on the drilling location through the use of the Permit-to-Work system.
  • Ensure well control training and related certificates are current for all Drillers on assigned rig.
  • Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with the customer representative at the drilling location and report any conflicts to management. 
  • Fill-in for / relieve Drillers on site as required / needed.
  • Lead pre-tour meetings. 
  • Coordinate with Drilling Superintendent and Maintenance Manager in organizing Company field service technicians and third party technicians when required in order to perform troubleshooting, maintenance or repairs to rig equipment including during rig mobilizations per Company procedures. 
  • Ensure sufficient supplies and equipment spares are on hand or identified for efficient operations, and to reduce the risk of non-productive time.
  • Ensure that routine & preventative maintenance is performed on rig equipment as per Company Maintenance System.
  • Manage all aspects of the rig mobilization (organizing trucks, cranes, crews, etc.).
  • Coordinate and monitor the movement of Company assets and rental equipment assigned to the assigned rig.
  • Ensure that asset and equipment information is correct in the Company’s Preventative Maintenance System and that the information is updated timely when required.
  • Train and mentor rig crews with particular emphasis on Night Rig Managers and Drillers.
  • Coordinate the purchase and delivery of rig supplies using Company systems, processes and procedures and Authority Limits Matrix.
  • Monitor and manage daily operating costs to align with budgetary goals and report and explain abnormalities.
  • Ensure Material Transfers are submitted per Company policies. 
  • Ensure rig equipment list, rig move plan and load list are accurate and up to date.
  • Report incidents, equipment and system failures per Company procedures.
  • Ensure IADC and Morning Reports are accurately and timely completed and submitted, and that all hours are coded and activities noted correctly, and that tour sheets are completed reflecting correct crew members’ names, oil-based pay noted (when applicable), and working hours are correct and submitted daily for the assigned rig.
  • Participate in incident investigations as required by the Company’s system and processes.
  • Assess the implementation and effectiveness of the [Company Management System] (at least annually) and provide management with a plan for identified improvement opportunities.
  • Conduct performance reviews with rig crews as per the People Development process.
  • Assist the [Human Resource] department with the screening of new-hire applicants to determine if they are suitable for employment. Select Drillers as required for the rig.  Assist Drillers in the selection of Derrickmen, Motormen, and Floormen as required for the rig.
  • Participate in the planning and approval of personnel transfers, promotions, and terminations in accordance with the Personnel Movement Matrix.
