NETDEVOPS Packet Architect / Principal Engineer

Internet2 services and programs support their educational, research and community service mission and enhance how individuals communicate, collaborate, and innovate. Summary Internet2 is seeking a NetDevOps Packet Architect / Principal Engineer who will provide guidance on the strategic direction of Internet2’s packet network and related software development. You will engage with our domestic and international community to understand key use cases and develop technical solutions to support both operations and network research.
Based on that information, you will contribute to the roadmap for our technology implementations, continuously improve operational systems & processes, and assist our community with the optimal use of R&E resources. You will help solve complex problems for our community, including assisting them with debugging and problem solving performance issues across multiple networks at the international, national, regional, and campus levels. You will also serve on a team which includes an escalation point in support of our operations teams. This position combines general knowledge of network engineering concepts and technologies with expertise in cloud architecture, system administration, and software development, and participates in a Tier 5 on-call rotation covering the systems and services managed by the team.
This is a fully remote position, requiring some travel and frequent community interaction, and reports to the Director of Network Architecture, Engineering, and Operations.Principal Responsibilities:Collaborate with colleagues, community members, and divisional leadership, to determine business needs, assess project scope, and research/prototype potential solutions. ⧫ Travel to domestic and international meetings to assist with joint development of services. ⧫ Work closely with Peering Architect, Optical Architect (future), Senior Researcher, Transport Engineers, Build-Test and Business Unit to forecast and adapt the Internet2 network to new services and traffic demands.
⧫ Remain abreast with new technology developments in the packet-related technologies, including both incumbent and potential vendors. Help maintain relationships with hardware and software vendors. ⧫ Provide support and technical expertise to other platform architects, including cloud/interconnect, senior researcher, and optical. ⧫ Assist with the development and implementation of laboratory resources to test new technologies, test network changes, and train engineers. ⧫ Collaborate with colleagues and divisional leadership to participate in estimation, task breakdown, and planning and prioritization of project milestones, deliverables, and functional and technical requirements.
⧫ Collaborate with other senior staff on the team to develop, promote, and document coding & configuration standards and best practices, including participation in peer reviews reviews. ⧫ Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Experience with complex IT deployments. 5 years in a senior engineering role guiding implementations with complex systems, software, and network deployment. ⧫ 3 years working in a metrics-driven 24x7x365 operations environment. ⧫ Experience with Internet ecosystems, including some of the following: open exchanges, cloud/peering, colocation, or transport infrastructure; knowledge or experience with physical connectivity at all layers.
⧫ Ability to work in a team-based environment, and continuously develop knowledge and skills related to the position. ⧫ Ability to clearly define problems and use appropriate methods to determine and implement solutions. ⧫ Broad understanding of the software development lifecycle, with knowledge of software development practice and technology, including source code control, automated testing, continuous integration, and issue tracking tools. ⧫ Broad understanding of cloud architecture concepts and practices, with knowledge of cloud-based service design and implementation tools and techniques.
