Detroit Healthy Housing Center’s Client Support and Transportation Specialist is part of the Homeless Recovery Services team. The Client Support and Transportation Specialist must possess the ability to work comfortably with individuals experiencing homelessness. This position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs, and use of a company vehicle. This position requires providing transportation for the clients for a variety of appointments and other needed services. The Client Support and Transportation Specialist is expected to provide support for the clients and provide crisis intervention as necessary. The Client Support and Transportation Specialist is expected to work independently or as part of a team, and able to maintain positive interactions with the clients, community partners/volunteers, and the HRS team.

Education, Licensure and Experience Requirements:


Education: High School Diploma or GED.

  • Required Professional Licensure: N/A; CPR/First Aid preferred

  • Requirements: Valid Michigan chauffer’s license; this role drives NSO consumers around the Metro Detroit Area, must have valid Auto insurance.

  • Additional Skills: One year of experience preferably in human services. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, 
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs, and use of office equipment required.

Some job duties:

  • Serve as the primary driver for the Detroit Healthy Housing Center, executing daily transports as well as handling special requests and/or individualized transportation needs.
  • Engage and communicate with clients in a friendly and professional manner in an effort to create a welcoming and safe environment.
  • Maintain direct contact with clients to assess and identify the needs of a client, serving as their advocate.
  • Support clients in completing the objectives outlined in his/her housing plan.
  • Assist clients requiring additional support or advocacy due to the presence of a disabling condition with transferring in and out of the agency vehicle, by providing a warm hand-off and pick-up from appointment locations, and/or by accompanying client during appointments.
  • Pick up of donations and/or supplies for the Detroit Healthy Housing Center.
  • Pick up of meals served within the Detroit Healthy Housing Center.
  • Load and unload supplies as necessary.
  • Provide support to Case Managers, Client Support Specialists, Emergency Shelter Operation Specialists, and other shelter staff as assigned.

Working Conditions and Necessary Capabilities


  • Works in a homeless shelter type setting; uses a computer, telephone, and other office equipment as needed, to perform duties. 
  • Employee work location will have an office-style setting, in addition to the common areas of a homeless shelter.
  • The noise level in the work environment is variable, due to frequent contact with clients.
  • Frequently required to sit, walk, and stand.
  • Bends, stoops, and must be able to lift at least 25lbs.
  • Manual dexterity and regular fine-finger and hand/wrist motions are required for operating a keyboard and writing.
  • Seeing/vision, talking/speaking and listening/hearing are continuously required.
  • May have exposure to cleaning chemicals as needed
  • May have potential exposure to airborne infectious agents, blood and/or bodily fluids during medical emergencies.
