The Team
As a small-but-mighty Creative team, we touch every corner of the growing Upstart business. We sit within Growth, writing and designing for impact across all channels and verticals, elevating the brand, and seeking to be thought-leaders in our industry and beyond. We are currently working hard and fast to meet the company’s needs while building a culture of creativity that will empower the continued evolution of our work. In short, we’re darn good but we’re looking for teammates to help us rise to greatness!As the Copywriting Manager at Upstart, you will strategize and implement new ways for the Copywriting function to impact our brand, products, and channels.
You will contribute holistically to our success across Brand and Marketing, including, but not limited to: Writing compelling and empathetic copy for emails and consumer comms, drafting headlines and direct response content for Paid Social, collaborating with designers, stakeholders, and Product teams, and defining our brand’s unique tone and voice to elevate our identity to the next level. You’ll cement your decisions and direction into shared documents that enable our partners to carry a cohesive vision across all touchpoints.

The team operates on the East/West coast time zones.
Travel requirements
As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Be an advocate for the Brand and an expert on our products—translating that understanding into actionable content, concepts, and consumer experiences
- Interpret and influence creative briefs to create customer-focused positioning and creative communications strategies that drive defined KPIs
- Support a test-and-learn environment, tracking performance across channels and adjusting as necessary
- Collaborate with Designers, Video Editors, and Creative Leadership to create compelling brand experiences and drive new ideas
- Coach, mentor, and provide frameworks for success to our current and future copywriters
- Stay up to date with industry standards, changes, and channel-specific best practices
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum qualifications:
- Minimum of 8 years of professional experience writing consumer copy for both Brand and Growth marketing
- Minimum 4 years experience in-house with growth-focused consumer brands
- Minimum 2+ years direct management experience
- A portfolio of work establishing expert abilities writing anything from snappy headlines to compelling calls-to-action and demonstrates a range of capabilities, including emails, sms, landing pages, paid ads and more
- Preferred qualifications:
- Expert understanding of strategic best practices within per-channel strategies
- A penchant for storytelling that turns even the driest topic into a compelling engagement driver
- Ability to distill dense technical or conceptual ideas into simple, relatable consumer-facing language
- Understands the nuance of language across digital culture and how to integrate that within brand strategy
- Ability to crystallize vision and perspective into guidelines and documentation that enable writers and non-writers alike

Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
