SUMMARY:
The Controller is responsible for financial planning and analysis function, oversees accounting operations, manages the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions, manages the vendor rebate management process, and oversees the HR department. A key focus is planning and managing a formal budgeting process. Additionally, the controller is responsible for reviewing current accounting processes and making recommendations to improve operational efficiencies. The controller must have advanced communication, technology, analytical, and management skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Provide comprehensive financial updates to senior management by evaluating, analyzing, and reporting appropriate data points
Assist with guiding financial decisions by applying company policies and procedures to the current economic landscape
Develop, implement, document, and maintain financial controls and guidelines with a focus on offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes
Oversee a formal budgeting process and assist with the achievement of budgeting goals with proper scheduling, analysis, and corrective action
Help support short and long-term operational strategies
Monitor all accounts for budgetary purposes at the departmental level and overall corporate level and conduct regular meetings with the department leaders
Track financial and operating performance benchmarks, budgets, program monitoring, and reporting standards on a monthly and annual basis
Enforce internal controls along with the accounting manager to maximize the protection of company assets, policies, procedures, and workflows
In conjunction with our technology leaders, assist with the evaluation of the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting databases
Assist the department leaders with financial analysis as it relates to capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations
Manage tax compliance and liaise with tax advisors
Monitor cash flow, working capital, and liquidity to ensure financial stability
Lead and motivate the HR team to ensure they provide high-quality services and support to the employees and managers
Develop and implement HR policies, procedures, and programs that align with the company's vision, mission, and values
Oversee the recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, development, performance management, and retention of staff
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to employment, labor, benefits, and safety
Manage employee relations and handle any issues or grievances that arise
Establish and maintain effective communication and collaboration with all levels of the organization
Provide strategic guidance and advice to the senior management on HR matters and best practices
Monitor and analyze HR metrics and trends and provide recommendations for improvement
Manage the HR budget and allocate resources efficiently
Foster a positive and inclusive work culture that reflects the company's values and goals
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Proficient in accounting software and Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel including advanced proficiency in Excel, including the use of pivot tables, VLOOKUP, macros, and data analysis tools
Knowledgeable of GAAP and other relevant accounting standards and regulations
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to present financial data clearly and concisely
Detail-oriented, organized, and accurate in preparing and reviewing financial reports and statements
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams
Experience in food distribution or related industry preferred
Familiarity with inventory management, cost accounting, and logistics best practices
Ability to adapt to changing business needs and priorities
Ethical, professional, and committed to maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
Ability to cope with stress, fatigue, and emotional situations
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or Business Administration required
Supervisory or management experience required
Ten years or more of related experience is required; wholesale distribution experience preferred
Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to sit for prolonged periods and use a computer, keyboard, mouse, calculator, and other office equipment
Ability to read, write, speak, and hear clearly and effectively
