Job Summary
The Survey Technician works under the supervision of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor. This position is based out of our Lexington, KY location and may require travel to project sites. The successful candidate will be responsible for processing field survey data files for all types of survey projects, including Boundary, Construction, Topography, As-Built, and various data management task, such as coordinate conversions and adjustments. Survey Technician capabilities must include a strong knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Trimble GNSS, and conventional Surveying instrumentation.
Essential Functions of the Job
- Process Field Survey data files with project specific feature codes and attributes using Trimble Business Center (TBC) software, and exporting data into various file types, such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcView, excel spread sheets and industry standard csv files.
- Review daily progress on a project basis and maintain a log of data files submitted by Survey field crews.
- Interfaces with Field Survey Party Chief and Supervisors, identifying omissions and or deficiencies found in Survey Data files.
- Prepare technical correspondence and complete comprehensive reports addressing Field Survey progress, and data integrity as necessary.
- Produces plans, maps, files and charts as necessary.
- Interfaces with the VP of Survey, Director(s) of Survey, Survey Supervisor and/or Survey Manager during the planning, scoping, execution and completion of survey projects to ensure that assigned tasks meet and/or exceed project requirements.
- Ensures adherence to company and project specifications as they relate to both conventional and GPS survey methods/procedures.
- Applies knowledge of pipeline surveying, construction and operations to ensure that relevant and pertinent features are located, observed, identified and monumented to company and project specifications.
- Adheres to and enforces Company policies and procedural standards.

- Proficient working knowledge of computers and Windows applications.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access and Outlook).
- Strong working knowledge of pipeline route selection, surveying, construction and operations/maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, topographic maps, tax/parcel maps, plats and deed descriptions.
- Submit and maintain 811 locate tickets.
- Strong working knowledge of both conventional and survey/mapping-grade GPS survey equipment and methods.
- Performs other tasks as directed by the VP of Survey and/or Director(s) of Survey.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum three years’ experience in processing Survey Data, including topography, boundary surveys, ALTA surveys, platting, construction staking, preparing legal descriptions, etc
- Proficient in AutoCAD and Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Trimble GNSS, and conventional Surveying instrumentation.
- Preferred operational experience with industry standard equipment and software platforms including, at a minimum, the following:Trimble R12 GNSS GPS systemsTrimble GeoXH GPS systems, Trimble GOE 6000 GPS SystemsTopcon, Nikon, total stationsTrimble TSC7 data collectorsTrimble Business Center (TBC) software
Education Requirements
Survey technicians typically need some type of college training. Many survey technicians complete associate’s degrees or certificate programs in survey technology. Survey technology programs focus on professional land surveying techniques. Students learn about practices of field surveying, survey reduction, field and office procedures, and how to use many different instruments and equipment. Many survey technicians also gain voluntary professional certification from the National Society of Professional Surveyors, to remain competitive in the field.
