Established in 1989, Sandalwood is a 120 person professional services enterprise operating in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. As Controller, you will play a critical role in shaping the financial success of our company.   As the Controller at Sandalwood Engineering & Ergonomics, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and reporting.

Reporting directly to the Managing Partners/ Owners, you will work closely with the executive team to develop and execute financial strategies that align with the company's goals and objectives. Additionally, you will provide financial guidance and support to cross-functional teams and departments. Financial Operations and Analysis: 

  • Develop and maintain financial models, budgeting, and forecasting processes. 
  • Monitor and analyze financial performance, providing insights and recommendations. 
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the executive team. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams. 
  • Perform month-end close, quarterly and year end processes. 
  • Perform payroll for Sandalwood’s operations in the United States and Canada. 
  • Handle cash management tasks including banking relationships, monitoring foreign exchange, and managing cash flow. 
  • Maintain accurate and timely financial accounts for the Canadian and US companies (separate). 
  • Interface with Sandalwood de Mexico Accounting leadership and external advisors to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting. 
  • Prepare a monthly global financial report that includes Canada, the United States and Mexico financials.  
  • Actively monitor and manage Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivables for all three countries. 

Financial Systems and Controls: 

  • Establish, monitor, and enforce internal controls. 
  • Implement and maintain financial systems and controls. 
  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations and standards. 
  • Collaborate with external auditors. 

Taxes: 

  • Coordinate tax planning and compliance activities for our operations in Canada, the United States and Mexico. 

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Support strategic decision-making. 
  • Direct and supervise in-house Bookkeeper, as well as supplier relationships including accountants in each country of operation. 
  • Contribute to financial, accounting, and organizational success. 
  • Perform other related duties as necessary. 

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills. 
  • Proficient in accounting  software Experience with QuickBooks is preferred. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software. 

Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field, Masters degree a plus.  
  • 7+ years of experience in financial management or related roles. 
  • 5+ years of experience within a medium or large size global company operating in multiple currencies.  
  • 2+ years of experience in payroll processing and payroll tax administration. 
  • Proven track record of financial analysis and reporting. 
  • Strong knowledge of financial systems and controls. 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong leadership and people management abilities. 
  • High level of integrity and ethical conduct. 
  • Spanish language proficiency would be a plus. 
  • CPA or CMA certification is preferred. 
  • Experience in the engineering or consulting industry is a plus. 
  • Work is to be conducted in person at the Sandalwood office in Livonia, MI. 

Physical Requirements: Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.  Must have the ability to express or exchange ideas and provide accurate information by means of the spoken word and or instrument to impact oral communication.

The ability to understand and distinguish speech and /or other sounds.  Must have the ability to walk short distances, drive a vehicle and/ or arrange to be transported to deliver and pick up materials. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to bend, stoop, and climb to reach materials (must be able to climb a step ladder at approximately three feet in height.   Able to travel as needed, though regular travel is not expected for this role.
