Under the general direction of practice attorneys, works to analyze Veteran’s Affairs decisions received; provides customer service to Veterans; provides assistance to those requesting interpretations of VA decisions, VA regulations, and VA policies; and provides general assistance and guidance as requested from all co-workers.Duties and Responsibilities
- Analyzes VA decisions in connection with appellate review.
- Prepares Notices of Disagreement, FOIA requests, independent medical opinion requests, and other related correspondence as necessary.
- Assists Veterans with development of issues on appeal, pending claims, or new claims which may require gathering of additional evidence. Seeks evidence from sources such as the VA Medical Center, National Personnel Records Center, and National Archives. Performs research for medical or service documents from various sources, including the Internet, to support claimed issues. Requests personal statements from Veterans and others.
- Performs public contact fulfillment by mail, e-mail, telephone, or in-person.
- Acts as a VA resource to assist staff at all levels who request technical assistance to resolve VA issues.
- Communicates with VA Regional Offices when appropriate and necessary to solve problems and improve service to the Veteran.
Experience and Qualifications
- Understanding of VA compensation, pension, and ancillary benefits, as provided in Title 38, United States Code.
- Understanding of human anatomy; knowledge of medical terminology, diseases, and symptoms.
- Understanding of military service and history.
- Effective customer service skills–ability to communicate well in person, writing and/or telephone.
- Ability to compose and format written documents.
- Knowledge and experience with practices of office management.

- Ability to handle confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
- Must have strong multi-tasking skills, be up-beat, friendly and possess a professional disposition, and excellent phone etiquette.

- Military member, veteran, spouse, dependent, or relative preferred.
- A tip of the spear mindset – capacity to relentlessly advance justice for the client.
- Tech savvy – must be able to work within various software programs, quick learner, ability to record files and data in document management software.
