What You’ll Do


Altaeros seeks a Controls Engineer to join the Controls Engineering Team and help build the autonomous flight controls and automated dispatch control. As a member of the Controls team at Altaeros, you are responsible for the Aerostat Autopilot which is at the heart of every SuperTower (https://www.altaeros.com/aerostat-autopilot/). The Controls Engineer will work cross functionally with other engineers in aerodynamics, system modeling, and software teams, as well as with systems, field operations and manufacturing.Altaeros is a rapidly growing team working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Within your first 6 months you will:


· Develop unit tests, functional tests and other software quality measures within the Mathworks Simulink environment to validate the deployed codebase.· Develop simulations, software tests, and flight test objectives to improve robustness and performance of the controls system and improve the model-based design capability.· Prepare and deploy the autonomous controls system and hands-on sensor and actuator commissioning.· Collaborate across the team to define priorities for refinement of the existing autonomous controls system and guide further feature development.· Participate in design reviews and systems verification and validation, and document development activities per established product development standard operating procedures.· Thrive in a fast-paced startup development environment and meet aggressive product launch schedules.

Required Qualifications:


· Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering.· Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, including control systems design and simulation.· Exceptional interpersonal and spoken and written communication skills.· “Startup Can Do Attitude”: Quick learner, passionate, nimble, attention to detail & adaptable.

Desired Experience:


· Development and implementation of autonomous control systems.· Experience with MATLAB/Simulink toolboxes e.g. signal processing, aerospace, Embedded Coder.· Knowledge of Model-Based-Design (MBD) principles and best practices.· Embedded C/C++ software development.· Industrial automation hardware, sensors (e.g. GPS, INS, anemometers, pressure, temperature), motors and valves, including commissioning of these hardware.· PLC programming or Microcontroller programming.
