What You’ll Do
Altaeros is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to play a pivotal role in advancing our autonomous flight and dispatch control systems. As a key member of the Controls Engineering Team, you will be instrumental in developing and refining the Aerostat Autopilot, the core component of every SuperTower (https://www.altaeros.com/aerostat-autopilot/). Collaborating closely with aerodynamics, system modeling, and software teams, as well as with systems, field operations, and manufacturing, you will drive innovation and excellence in our control systems.Altaeros operates within a rapidly evolving landscape, offering an exciting, dynamic environment for growth.

Within your first 6 months you will:
· Develop robust unit tests, functional tests, and other software quality measures within the MathWorks Simulink environment to validate the deployed codebase.· Design simulations, software tests, and flight test objectives to enhance the robustness and performance of the controls system, advancing our model-based design capability.· Prepare and deploy the autonomous controls system, including hands-on sensor and actuator commissioning.· Collaborate cross-functionally to prioritize refinements to the existing autonomous controls system and guide further feature development.· Participate in design reviews and systems verification and validation, meticulously documenting development activities in accordance with established product development practices.· Thrive in a fast-paced startup environment, meeting aggressive product launch schedules with agility and precision.
Qualifications:
· Advanced degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or related field with a focus on controls systems design, coupled with a minimum of 6 years of relevant industry or academic experience.· Expertise in developing and implementing autonomous control systems, demonstrating a deep understanding of control theory and its practical applications.· Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, encompassing control systems design and simulation, signal processing, and embedded C/C++ software development (e.g., Embedded Coder), along with a solid grasp of Model-Based-Design principles and best practices.· Hands-on experience with industrial automation hardware, as well as sensor and actuator commissioning, to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance.· Knowledge of AC motor operation and control, with a proven track record of applying this knowledge in real-world scenarios.· Experience with embedded controls coding, demonstrating the ability to translate theoretical concepts into functional, efficient code.· Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills are paramount, as this role involves frequent interaction with diverse stakeholders across Altaeros.· A “Startup Can-Do Attitude”: We value quick learners who are passionate, nimble, detail-oriented, and adaptable, ready to embrace challenges and drive impactful results.
