Technician II position requirements:
- They should be able to stand for long durations, bend, squat, reach, walk and able to lift and carry greater than 20lbs but not exceed 100lbs.
- Have advanced Telephony and Ethernet knowledge along with trouble shooting skills.
- Can work within a team environment and work unsupervised.
Education/Certifications:
- High school or equivalent
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a related field
Skills needed:
- Know how to use basic hand tools.
- Have basic installation knowledge to be able to either rack mount or wall mount electronic equipment.
- Know the basic ethernet cabling requirements for running cable and terminating jacks and patch panels according to EIA/TIA standards.
- Know the basic Telephony color code.
- Know how to wire different types of phone jacks such as RJ-11, RJ-14, RJ21X, RJ31X, T-1.
- Know how to terminate or punch down telephone cables.
- Know how to install and troubleshoot analog voice such as basic POTS, PRI, T-1.
- Understand and know how to install Hosted Voice systems.
- Know and understand basic ethernet LAN.
- Know and understand how to perform a site survey for analog or Hosted Voice.
- Know the basics of fiber optic cable/jumpers and know how to clean a connector and check light levels with a power meter.
- Know the difference between the different fiber optic cable types such as multi-mode or single mode.
- Know the different types of fiber connectors such as SC/LC/ST/FC.
- Know the different SFP types and be able to distinguish between them.
- Understand and know how to troubleshoot fiber using OTDR.
- Understand and know how to run different circuit tests such as RFC-2544 and others.
- Have some advanced computer skills with the knowledge of how to statically assign ethernet ports with IP’s, use Microsoft applications such as email or browser functions.
- Have good customer service skills.
- Able to manage assigned tasks.
Duties:
- Installing or mounting electronic equipment in relay racks, on a wall, or backboard.
- Pulling cable vertically and horizontally and terminating.
- Work from a ladder or elevated positions.
- Testing internet circuits using a computer or test set.
- Testing analog telephone services such as POTS, PRI T-1.
- Installing and troubleshooting Hosted Voice systems.
- Performing Site Surveys.
- Work advanced trouble tickets such as Hosted Voice or Fiber cuts to restore customer service.
- Troubleshoot fiber optic cabling using OTDR or other tests.
- Test advanced circuit types such as ELAN or ELINE.
- Traveling outside of assigned work area and staying overnight if needed.
- Working with different internal groups to install or restore customer service.
- Being on call outside of normal business hours.
- Tasks assigned by Manager/Supervisor.
