A thriving economy in space is needed to make life on Earth more vibrant, sustainable, and equitable. Space technology will enable global access to information, solutions to climate change, answers to global food security, products that transform healthcare, clean energy production, and more. Today, rocket launch options are slow, expensive, and unreliable. Stoke is building the world’s most efficient fully and rapidly reusable rocket designed to fly daily that will radically increase access to space and open up the space economy to safeguard our precious home, Earth.
Description
Stoke’s Stage Fluids team is developing a reusable LNG/LOX first stage and reusable LH2/LOX second stage for our launch vehicle, Nova. As the Stage 1 Fluids RE (Responsible Engineer), you will be responsible for driving the architecture, design, and implementation of the first stage fluids system. Your responsibilities will include definition of overall system requirements, ownership of the fluids schematic, concepting for hardware designs, creating models in CAD and completing analysis, procuring parts with suppliers and integrating them onto the vehicle, and coordinating and executing the pre-flight stage testing campaign.
As part of a small, well-supported team, you will have access to the resources you need to get the job done right while simultaneously boosting your skills at a pace that can’t be matched in most other roles. You must be ready to stay focused, move fast, self-direct, and learn on the fly.
Responsibilities
- Collect design requirements from multidisciplinary teams, and use these to create concepts for fluids systems
- Lead the architecture for the entire Stage 1 Fluids System. Run architecture trades for major parts of the system, rapidly transform these decisions into real-life hardware implementations
- Fully own the fluids schematic for the Stage 1 Fluids System
- Develop fluids system concept of operations for ground, flight, and recovery phases of vehicle’s life
- Perform gas and liquid fluids system sizing analysis (incompressible and compressible flow)
- Design and analyze launch vehicle tubing, manifold, and mounting systems, ensure these systems are structurally capable of surviving vehicle load cases. Create CAD models and drawings.
- Coordinate directly with suppliers to procure parts
- Coordinate and execute the manufacturing and integration of fluids systems
- Coordinate and execute the integrated stage testing campaign leading up to Nova’s first flight
- Mentor and guide newer engineers working on Stage 1 Fluids Systems
- Define and manage the schedule and budget for your fluids systems
Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience in design, build, and/or testing of rocket fluids systems, rocket engines, and valves
- 1+ years of experience in leading a technical project
- Exceptional command of fundamentals, including compressible flow, thermodynamics, structures, control systems, cryogenics, and instrumentation
- Strong knowledge with data analysis and data processing
- Extensive experience with CAD tools and configuration management (Siemens NX and Teamcenter preferred)
- Proficiency with understanding and maintaining revision-controlled P&ID’s
- Proficiency with aerospace standard fasteners, seals, tubing, fittings, and commercial off the shelf hardware
- Proficiency with instrumentation including pressure transducers, thermocouples, accelerometers, and flow meters
- Proficiency with fluid analysis tools (Siemens AMESim, Thermal Desktop, Python, EES, REFPROP, Excel, Matlab, or equivalent)
- Proficiency in GD&T, tolerance stackups, and material selection
- Hands on experience performing fabrication and assembly of components
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or similar
- Willing to relocate to Seattle, WA
