The Forest Carbon Scientist would use geospatial data, voluntary carbon market project documents, and ancillary data to derive insights about projects that Pachama may support or develop. They would own the evaluation and monitoring of existing carbon projects and be the point of contact for sales conversations. You would be excited about this role if you love the idea of moving fast with a high degree of independence in a growing start-up. You have 5+ years of experience in forest conservation, restoration, or management and have experience using remote sensing techniques and other geospatial data to analyze forest and land use changes.
You understand carbon accounting and are familiar with the major components of the Voluntary Carbon Market. You love to problem solve and are comfortable leading cross-functional efforts that require project management, strategic planning, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

This role is remote within North American time zones only.
What You Will Help Us With:
- Apply geospatial analysis to evaluate the climatic, environmental, and social benefits of forest carbon projects listed on the Voluntary Carbon Market.
- Create written documentation of findings and provide interpretation of findings for non-technical stakeholders.
- Support the design and evaluation of reforestation projects developed by Pachama by creating novel methods to estimate leakage and natural risk assessment and other carbon accounting parameters.
- Own the communication of evaluation results with internal and external stakeholders.
- Own Pachama monitoring processes for forest projects, which include analyzing data, deriving insights, and communicating details.
- Develop novel remote sensing analyses to help solve immediate technical needs. Work with cross-functional partners to implement and design new products.
Experience & Skills We’re Looking For:
- Postgraduate degree (M.S., PhD) in forest science-related field and >5 years of professional experience.
- Proficiency in applying remote sensing or geospatial data to forest ecosystems and explaining findings in technical settings.
- Proficiency with Python or R and experience implementing analyses with Google Earth Engine.
- Track record of peer-reviewed publications or conference presentations on relevant topics.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams, supporting complex projects, and communicating complex findings.. Self-starter with excellent organizational skills.
- Passion for environmental sustainability and a desire to make a meaningful impact on the planet.
- Experience working with forest carbon methodologies and carbon accounting principles.
- Excellent written and verbal with the ability to distill technical information for non-technical audiences.
The salary range for this position is $92,000 USD to $147,000 USD. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The salary for each posting reflects the compensation for new hire salaries for the position across all geographic locations. Individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
