We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Database Designer to lead the design and support of complex databases within a critical program at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This position demands extensive knowledge of VA systems, enterprise data reporting, and the ability to manage sensitive healthcare data securely. The ideal candidate will have a robust background in database technologies, experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems, and proficiency in Structured Query Language (SQL) queries, especially in the context of VHA’s Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW).
This role requires a strategic thinker with the ability to manage software development teams and navigate the complexities of major database technologies.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Database Design and Support: Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of complex databases, ensuring high levels of data quality and accessibility for business intelligence, reporting, and decision-making processes.
- Enterprise Data Reporting: Develop and oversee enterprise data reporting strategies, utilizing advanced SQL querying techniques to extract, analyze, and report data critical to the determination of entitlement to VBA benefits under Title 38 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
- System Integration and Data Migration: Manage the integration of VA systems including SDP, VBMS, VHA’s CDW, VistA, CAPRI, and VBA’s Corporate Database with modern EHR systems like Cerner, ensuring seamless data migration and interoperability.
- Team Leadership: Lead and manage software development teams, fostering a collaborative environment and ensuring the successful delivery of database projects on time and within budget.
- Data Security and Compliance: Ensure the management and control of sensitive healthcare data, adhering to all relevant laws and regulations regarding PHI and PII, and implementing best practices in data security.
- Technology Proficiency: Stay current with major database technologies including Oracle, SQL Server, Postgres, and MongoDB, applying best practices in database design and maintenance.
- SDLC and Best Practices: Apply a deep understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to all database projects, ensuring best practices in database architecture, design, and implementation.
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science or equivalent discipline.
- 8+ years of experience in database design and support, with a focus on VA systems.
- 5+ years of experience in enterprise data reporting and writing advanced SQL queries.
- Proficient understanding of the VHA’s CDW and the ability to chain adjacent hospital admissions for accurate determination of hospitalization duration relevant to VBA benefits.
- 1+ years of experience with Cerner EHR and VA health data migrations efforts.
- Familiarity with major EHR systems (i.e., Epic, Cerner) and data exchange formats such as FHIR, Blue Button, and CCDA.
- Extensive experience in managing software development teams and proficiency with major database technologies including Oracle, SQL Server, Postgres, and MongoDB.
- Strong knowledge and experience in managing and controlling sensitive healthcare data (PHI, PII, etc.).
- Well-versed in SDLC and project management methodologies.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage complex data integration challenges.
- Strong leadership qualities with experience in mentoring and developing technical teams.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.
- A proactive approach to staying informed on the latest technologies and best practices in database design and data management.

$135,000 - $140,000 a yearThis range is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as Trilogy Federal conducts an individual equity review for every candidate based on experience, location, education, industry experience, and comparisons to internal pay bands.
