Financial Controller – REFINE


LOCATION: TORONTO (HYBRID)

REFINE is a Toronto-based full service financial services firm providing full cycle outsourced accounting, finance, strategy and management consulting services in Canada, the US, and Australia. Our clients include, but are not limited to, leading firms in the entertainment, marketing, and advertising industry.

The Opportunity:


We are looking for a dynamic, articulate and experienced Financial Controller. Reporting directly to the Founder, the Controller will undertake all aspects of full cycle accounting, financial management, including financial reporting, budget and forecasts preparation, as well as development of internal control policies and procedures. The Finance Controller responsibilities will also include financial risk management.We look for teammates that are ambitious, filled with ideas, honest, fun, and excited to be a part of the next phase of the company’s growth.

Requirements:



  • QuickBooks Online experience a must

  • Strong Excel skills

  • Strong time management skills

  • Detail-Oriented

  • Excellent communication skills (oral/written)

  • Strong commitment to delivering on timelines

  • Solid financial and managerial accounting skills and experience (Canadian GAAP, full cycle accounting, payroll, internal controls, month end closing procedures/year-end closing procedures)

Responsibilities


The Controller is responsible for leading and developing a high-performing team responsible for strategic business reporting, forecasting, and insights/analysis as delivered through core forecasting processing (Monthly, Quarterly, Annual), long-term modelling and ad-hoc strategic support. The team provides end-to-end support including revenue, opex, net income, cash flow and balance sheet as well as corporate reporting for our executive management, owners including private equity and the board.


  • Full cycle accounting including but not limited to A/R, A/P, Revenue Recognition and all month-end related tasks and processes

  • Lead accounting process that will provide the foundation for financial management

  • Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budgets and financial forecasts and report variances

  • Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements

  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes

  • Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting

  • Manage and comply with provincial (CAN), state (USA), and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings

  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls

  • Recommend new procedures, instructions and system modifications to improve the efficiency, timeliness, accuracy and completeness of financial accounting practices

  • Timely reporting and maintenance of HST/GST and sales tax by province/state

  • Support the growth and development of the team

  • Additional controller duties as necessary

  • Qualifications

  • Proven work experience as a Financial Controller

  • 10+ years of overall combined accounting and finance experience in small to medium sized businesses

  • Ability to work on multiple corporations/businesses simultaneously

  • Advanced degree in Accounting

  • CPA designation or equivalent experience

  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures

  • Experience with creating financial statements

  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year end close process

  • Excellent accounting software and administration skills

  • Technology and systems forward thinker
