Description
As a Principal Engineer in the Technology Services group of Munich Re Automation Solutions you will play a vital role in the delivery, design, creation and enhancement, of the core software at the heart of our product offerings, with leadership responsibility for the technical direction of the engineering teams.You will be expected to provide leadership and expertise. You will influence the software design and engineering approach of our existing and new SAAS offerings. You will be responsible for ensuring all Product, Project and Support development deliverables are in line with the engineering principles of the group.
You will be expected to ensure engineering decisions align with all delivery stake holders from SaaS Operations, Product Managers, Customer Solutions and Customer Support, as well as Regional Project Managers.You will directly work as an expert to advise a team of Software Engineers on design and implementation best practises and be responsible for co-ordinating with the QA & Release Lead and Platform Lead to ensure all activities are aligned and delivered to overall engineering delivery objectives.You will have a proven track record designing and implementing software in a cloud environment. Have a demonstrated ability to adapt software to cloud and develop new cloud native services. You should have broad experience across cloud and traditional on prem software systems particularly those that integrate with other systems, e.g. messaging and authentication.
Responsibilities include:
- Advise and mentor a team of technical experts responsible for the development and delivery of software solutions.
- Provide leadership, guidance and motivation to the development team(s) responsible for creating, implementing and performing continuous improvement.
- Champion process changes within Engineering and between stakeholder groups always looking to improve productivity and quality
- Be a leader in agile ceremonies helping the team to continuously improve their processes
- Encourage testing practices such as TDD and lead by example
- Lead development of System and Digital Services requirements based on customer, user and business requirements as defined by product management, including working with Architects on the selection of best suited infrastructure and technology ensuring feasibility, functionality, and integration with existing and future systems/platforms.
- Actively manage design reviews and risk analysis.
- Establish and promote software engineering best practices. Mentoring of engineers on technical issues, problem solving strategies, and engineering principles
- Collaborate with solution architects, business analysts and product management to develop business and technical requirements and designs to deliver high quality product and customer solutions
- Produce design documentation to guide developers
- Work with Product Architect to provide estimates for new product features
Technical / Professional Skills
Minimum of 15 years software engineering, with 2 years in a hands on software architect/principal engineer role
- Proven Project delivery record
- Track record of introducing process change
- Experience with CICD deployment to production with at least one Cloud Provider
- Cloud Monitoring in Production
- Web services design, implementation and testing.
- A good knowledge of serverless Java cloud and J2EE development
- Spring stack including Spring Cloud, Hibernate, JPA
- Typescript/JavaScript, Angular, AngularJS
- Exposure to Front End Design Systems
- Application Servers: - WebSphere, WebLogic, JBoss
- Databases:- DB2, Oracle, SQL Server, MySql and NoSQL exposure
- Software Development Processes – Agile, Scrum, Kanban
