Description:
The
Health and Safety
Specialist provides daily site support through guidance in the Health, Safety, Security, and Emergency Response disciplines. This position will demonstrate visible Health and Safety leadership and commitment through daily positive interactions while holding everyone accountable to Braskem’s Health and Safety policies and procedures. The Safety & Emergency Response Specialist will also lead the site’s emergency response team, which includes managing, coordinating, and maintaining all emergency response rosters, drill planning, scheduling, support and critique management, training, and metrics development & tracking.
In addition, the Safety & Emergency Response Specialist performs routine tasks and duties that prepare the organization and assist it in the prevention or improved response to events.
Responsibilities:
HEALTH & SAFETY
- Subject Matter Expert (SME) for site safety, emergency response, and security procedures.
- Be visible in the field to promote good health and safety practices.
- Supports the line organization, plant functional teams, and contractors in the field via direct involvement in routine and non-routine work activities.
- Continuously seeks out ways to improve Health and Safety cultural awareness.
- Complete weekly safety audits, assessments, and checklists as required.
- Serve as Contractor Administrator (Responsible Person) for safety service contractors.
- Serve as HES trainer for safety, emergency response, and life-critical procedures.
- Participates in formal and informal safety & health assessments/audits/investigations of safety, security, emergency response, facility, and compliance-related programs and procedures.
- Assist with coordinating Industrial Hygiene (IH) sampling activities, multi-gas monitor, radio, and PPE programs.
- Member of the site’s VPP Team and may assume the role of Coordinator.
FIRE PROTECTION EQUIPMENT
- Serves as the owner of the site’s fire protection system, i.e., fire water protection systems, fire suppression systems, fire detection systems, and fire extinguishers.
- Maintain all fire protection equipment (mobile and fixed) to ensure equipment is in a constant state of readiness.
- Coordinate or conduct all fire protection annual and monthly inspections.
- Work with Operations and Maintenance teams to coordinate inspections, maintenance, fire water isolations, and repairs to fire protection systems throughout the site.
- Oversee 3rd-party fire protection services assigned to work on on-site fire protection systems.
- May conduct inspections and repairs on an as-needed basis.
- Responsible for fire protection documentation and recordkeeping (i.e., inspection reports, repairs, impairments, etc.).
EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM
- Supports the Emergency Response Coordinator and ERT Team.
- Coordinate annual ERT medical evaluations.
- Alternate point of contact for Channel Industries Mutual Aid (CIMA) and Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) meetings.
Required Skills, Education, and Experience:
- Minimum two (2) years of safety experience in a refinery/chemical production facility in an operations, maintenance, or equivalent role
- Demonstrated knowledge of Federal and State (OSHA) Health and Safety Regulations.
- Hazard recognition, risk assessment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Demonstrated experience managing fire protection systems, emergency response, and safety equipment.
- Self-starter, ability to plan/organize tasks and consistently produce results with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated experience managing contractors for safety and emergency response equipment inspections and services. Ability to conduct pre-job conferences, schedule, oversee work, and hold contractors accountable.
- Interpersonal skills to effectively lead, influence, and work across organizational boundaries, including maintenance, operations, capital, and contractors.
- Proficient in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to develop PowerPoint presentations.
- Must be available nights, weekends, and as needed.
Preferred Skills, Education, and Experience:
- Associate Degree or higher in Fire Science, Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related degree or Industrial Emergency Specialist Certification or 5+ years.
- CFPS, NFPA 1081, OHST, SMS, CHMM, or relevant certifications a plus.
- Knowledge of NIMS/ICS and ability to deliver NIMS/ICS training.
- Project management skills
- Experience in SAP/Coupa a plus.
- VPP experience.
