As PPT’s software development safety engineer you will be assisting various Army aviation and similar projects in defining software development, validation, and verification requirements that meet the intent of DO-178C and DO-278. This will also include performing technical evaluations, inspections, and audits of software development and verification activities to determine the achieved Software Level (IDAL). The ability to collaborate across all project disciplines, exercise strong written and oral communication skills, multi-task, maintain a strong attention to detail, and have excellent follow-through skills are a must.
Responsibilities and Duties for the Software Development Safety Engineer:Responsibilities will be to provide software safety support to Army software development projects that are implementing DO-178C or DO-278 equivalent development and verification processes including providing general guidance and interpretation of the industry standards, supporting safety assessments to establish the IDAL, and assisting in preparation of DO-178C/DO-278 artifacts such as the Plan for Software Aspects of Certification (PSAC)/ Plan for Software Aspects of Approval (PSAA), Software Configuration Management Plan, Software Quality Assurance Plan, Software standards, and Software Accomplishment Summary.Responsibilities may also include projects that require conduct of software system safety evaluations for DoD systems as well as software system requirements identification and development process by evaluating and assessing planning, design, development, production, and operations for DoD software systems architectures.

These support activities require working knowledge of MIL-HDBK-516, MIL-STD-882, JSSSEH, AMCOM Regulation 385-17, CMMI, or similar software safety standards.Desired Qualifications for the Software Development Safety Engineer:

  • Must have at least a BS in Engineering or Computer Science
  • Must have at least 5 years relevant experience
  • Current or past FAA DER/ODA Member with software approval authority
  • Application of DO-297
  • RTOS, multi-core processor, aircraft networking/databus experience
  • Highly motivated with a desire for learning new technologies and processes
  • Experience in evaluation of various software related products and assessments of software products through all phases of the development life cycle, including software specifications, design verification, coding, testing and results data validation
  • Experience with DO-178C and DO-278
  • Good communication skills in preparing technical reports
  • Experience as a participant in working groups, review panels or boards, or program and design reviews
  • Must be able to travel (5-10%)
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security clearance eligibility at the required level
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
