Position Summary:


The Chief Marking Officer (CMO) position is a business-critical leadership role with responsibility for defining Discovery’s marketing strategy and owning its execution through branding, digital marketing, content management, eCommerce, tradeshows, and other client-facing channels.  Reporting to the CEO, the CMO will be directly responsible for leading a team of marketing professionals and will work closely with Discovery’s business and commercial leaders to align efforts to achieve the company’s overall growth strategies.  This individual will lead the strategy and execution of all Discovery marketing initiatives.

Must-Have Qualifications (Education, Skills, Experience):


  • Bachelor’s degree in related science, marketing, or an equivalent field required.
  • Minimum of 15 years' experience marketing similar products to biopharma, diagnostic or life science industries in senior leadership or product manager roles. Experience in high-growth environments within private equity is preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of the biotech and life science tools landscape, including market trends, competitive analysis, and customer insights.
  • Experience in preparing and sharing insights with executives around strategic marketing initiatives, as well as performance indicators of a marketing function.
  • Proven record of accomplishment of developing, managing, and executing marketing strategy and tactical campaigns.
  • Demonstrated success in building a compelling communications program to support a company/brand as it invests in building a market-leading position.
  • Digital marketing and eCommerce channel experience.
  • Proven leadership of managing remote teams.
  • Experience with Salesforce.com is required.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Strategy Leadership: Lead and develop the overall Discovery marketing roadmap in close collaboration with the CEO, business leaders, and sales organizations. Develop and execute annual marketing plans, aligned with company and business unit strategies with goal of increasing market share in target markets.
  • Client Segmentation: Collaborate with sales and business units to define client segmentation models and target buyer personas.
  • Branding and Messaging: Continue to refine the company branding strategy to build brand equity in Discovery Life Sciences while maintain strong brand recognition for acquired product and service brands. Create compelling and clear value propositions for Discovery’s products and services.
  • Communication Programs: Drive proactive communication programs and thought leadership through digital, media relations and other conventional channels.
  • Market Research: Conduct market, customer, brand, and competitive landscape research initiatives.
  • Marketing Communications: Develop innovative marketing communications, including scientific marketing collateral and social, earned and paid media.
  • Website Development: Enhance Discovery’s website to drive inbound marketing lead generation and eCommerce conversion.
  • Marketing Training: Train business and commercial teams on key marketing initiatives and messaging.
  • Team Leadership: Manage and develop marketing team to support overall company goals and business unit marketing plans and initiatives.
  • Performance Metrics: Develop marketing metrics/KPIs to track performance and optimize activities.
  • Budget Management: Own the marketing budget and manage external agencies and partners.

Location and work hours:


  • Onsite at a US office location – first preference for Huntsville, AL; Boston, MA, San Francisco, CA, or Newtown, PA are also options
  • Relocation support is available for the selected qualified candidate relocating to one of our U.S. office locations.
  • Up to 20% domestic and 10% international travel required for site meetings and customer meetings.
