Commonwealth Fusion SystemsDevens, Massachussets, United StatesHybrid, Onsite
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change.

To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role. The Chief Engineer has the responsibility for providing technical expertise and leadership in theplanning, engineering, design, implementation, and support of highly engineered mechanical processsystems that will enable the functioning of a fusion energy power plant. Essential to the role will be theability to examine the interactions of these various process systems to ensure the integratedfunctioning performs as expected as well as proper functioning at the interface points between thesesystems.

The successful Candidate will be responsible for providing technical support to theengineering and delivery teams, assist in defining functional requirements as well as participate in thereview of design drawings and specifications. The successful Candidate must have strong technical knowledge and skills of process piping, processequipment, process design, and associated support systems. The Candidate must have a demonstrated ability to review and comment on design documents and provide clear feedback. The position requires an excellent working knowledge of the project delivery process including planning, design, construction and commissioning, and qualification. This position will work with in-house Engineering teams, Project/Construction Managers, partner firms, contractors, vendors, to design, deliver, and start up new facilities and systems.

This team member will:

  • Provide consultation and guidance through the design phases of a project including Design Basis development, concept, preliminary and detailed engineering and design, as well as development of detailed specification development for highly engineered equipment
  • Work with CFS Engineers, contractors, and vendors to ensure successful project execution
  • Oversee the implementation of design at the job site, identifying, and communicating issues and facilitating their resolution. The candidate must also be capable of determining requirements and approaches for testing at both system and equipment levels
  • Effectively document, track, and drive the resolution of issues identified in design and construction
  • Lead or participate in equipment and system start-up. In this role, the successful Candidate must be knowledgeable of safety aspects as well as support commissioning and qualification activities
  • The Chief Engineer may be asked to support the Owner’s engineering and operations staff during the early days of operations. In this role, they must be intimately knowledgeable of the technical aspects of the newly delivered equipment and systems
