Engineering Manager in Wealth at Monzo

Wealth is the pillar of Monzo which builds financial products to help our customers grow their money. They lead products such as our savings offerings, investment pots, and building brand new 0-1 products that support our users to make the most of their money and plan for their financial future. The Engineering Manager role at Monzo is split into three pillars - people, product, and technical leadership. Engineering Managers are accountable for the technical and delivery outcomes for their area - that means supporting and developing best in class engineering talent, as well as creating an inclusive team environment for people to do their best work. You can read more on the expectations of Engineering Managers on our Progression Framework. As an Engineering Manager in Wealth, you’ll be leading two teams of Engineers - one is our Savings team and the second is newly formed.

  • Savings - Leads our end to end savings offerings including our Instant Access savings pots, cash ISA, and savings marketplace. We launched our Instant Access savings pots last year and it’s become one of our most loved Monzo products.
  • Brand New - They’re building a 0 - 1 financial product that you’ll help to shape and build from scratch.
  • Our ideal candidate for this role has an entrepreneurial mindset. If you’ve founded your own start-up or built products from scratch, you’ll stand out 😊 Whilst you’ll have product counterparts that you’ll partner with closely, we’re looking for someone product driven who can shape the what, how, and why, of their product area. (This role is advertised as an Engineering Manager but we would hire a Senior Engineering Manager if we found the right person, so if you’re already a Manager of Managers, let us know in your application).

Is this role right for you?

While this is not a role which requires hands-on-coding, we are looking for an experienced manager who has a strong technical and delivery background and

has worked as a software engineer in previous roles.

We recognise that Engineering Managers lead in different ways, we’re looking for someone who:

    • Delivery and Execution: Enjoys taking accountability for delivery across your squad(s), collaborating with the Technical Lead and Product Manager.
    • Engineering and Operational Excellence: Actively fosters a high bar for engineering excellence within your teams. You’re accountable for the technical outcomes your teams deliver alongside individual engineer performance and growth, so holding a high bar (and clearly articulating your expectations) is key.
    • People Leadership: Is able to lead a group of around ~10 engineers and support, coach and develop them through their career with regular 1:1s and continuous feedback.
    • Technical Influence: Partners with senior engineers to drive technical initiatives that raise the bar for our engineering practices.
    • Stakeholder Relationships: Builds strong stakeholder relationships with other teams, and creates a focus space for engineers to do their best work.
    • Organisational Wide Impact: Collaborates with the wider engineering organisation to contribute to company-wide best managerial and technical practices and standards.

    Nice to have:

    • If you have experience working on savings products, or building products from scratch, this would be an added bonus.
    • If you have experience working in an experimentation led environment with distributed systems experience.

We consider your application across all open EM roles at Monzo independent of which role you've applied for, so

if you've recently applied to a similar role at Monzo and have been unsuccessful, please wait 6 months before applying again.
