The Lead Cafe Baker's role is an integral part of the efficient, enthusiastic team that makes Grand Central Bakery’s vibrant cafes such wonderful spaces to be in. This position works to meet all specifications including quality, timing, and pars, while working to continually improve baking skills. Grand Central aims to be the best part of the customer’s day by providing delicious pastries and excellent customer service. The Pastry Baker Lead acts as an ambassador from the Commissary Pastry to the cafes and from the cafes to the customers.Please note that this position will assist cafe staff with customer service, order fulfillment, and other cafe duties during the standard hours of operation.Location: 4440 NE Fremont Portland, OR 97213Rate of Pay: This position pays $18.10 per hour plus tips.

  • Tips average is $9.00 - $10.00 per hour. 

Schedule: Full-time, 5 shifts per week, early morning position with shifts scheduled between 3:00AM and 1:00PM; not seasonal. Schedule flexibility required, including weekends and holidays.

Qualifications and Skills:


  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English required
  • Maintains food handler’s card – new hires are expected to have a valid card by their first date of work
  • Basic math skills required
  • 2+ year(s) professional pastry experience preferred
  • Must demonstrate regular attendance by coming to work on scheduled working days and being on time
  • Must display professionalism and personality with customers
  • Management and training experience a plus
  • Willing and able to cover shifts at different cafes

Physical requirements include but are not limited to:


  • The Pastry Lead is expected to stand for 100% of the shift worked and walks up to the equivalent of two miles per shift and is expected to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • This position requires participating in procedures that require a high level of repetitive motion involving the hands, wrists, arms, and back.
  • The position involves working with heavy equipment including Hobart mixers, rack ovens, and reach-in freezers.
  • Pastry Leads work in a bakery and are constantly exposed to wheat flour dust and other grain dusts (rye, corn, oat).
