Director, Global Payroll and Mobility

The Director, Global Payroll & Mobility will manage the global payroll teams at a hyper-growth SaaS company with operations in the US, UK, Europe, Australia, Asia and expanding! This leader will be a key partner in developing and implementing strategies to systematically scale the payroll operations and related accounting efficiently while maintaining quality, accuracy, internal controls and compliance. This leader will be responsible for overseeing 10 payrolls with varying degrees of reliance third party payroll providers and tax advisors in Argentina, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, Slovakia, the United States, for remote staff who are outside of these jurisdictions and for leading an effort develop more integrated management and reporting of these payrolls. This role will report to the Chief People Officer and will interact closely with the CFO, Controller, FP&A lead and other members of the Finance and Accounting teams.
What You'll Do

  • Payroll
  • Maintain, design and implement workflow and internal controls to ensure all payroll transactions are processed accurately, timely and in compliance with International, federal and local, state, country specific laws and regulations; and substantiated by sufficient set of underlying documentation and support.
  • Oversee full-cycle processing and accounting of US and International payroll for employees in US, UK and Europe and all off-cycle payroll as deemed necessary.
  • Monitor the latest payroll and wage laws and regulations to maintain tax and benefits compliance around deductions, withholdings, garnishments, classifications, employee mobility tracking, etc.
  • Support the corporate accounting team by participating in month/quarter/year-end financial closing activities as well as external audits: Payroll journal entries, payroll and benefits related account reconciliations.
  • Liaise with international accounting firms and providers
  • Create and maintains payroll policies and procedures.
  • Conduct regular payroll audits and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Manage global payroll implementations.
  • Helps resolve issues with tax authorities.

  • HRIS
  • Serve as line manager individuals dedicated to systems, tools and reporting within the HR Function, including Manager, HR Analytics and Manager, Recruitment Operations.
  • Oversee the administration, configuration, and maintenance of the HRIS, ensuring data accuracy, integrity, and security.
  • Identify opportunities for system improvements and collaborate with stakeholders to implement new functionalities, modules, or upgrades.
  • Develop and enforce data management protocols and standards, including data entry, validation, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Create and generate HR reports, metrics, and analytics to support HR decision-making and provide insights on key HR trends and metrics.
  • Identify process inefficiencies and recommend and implement streamlined solutions to enhance HR processes and system workflows.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate the HRIS with other HR systems and processes.
  • Provide user support and troubleshooting assistance to HR staff and end-users regarding HRIS functionality and system-related issues.
  • Mobility
  • Works with local HR Generalists to plan for and facilitate expatriate support from on-boarding to off-boarding (Payroll, Housing Lease, Benefit and other policies)
  • Performs research and provides insights on risks, cost and human capital implications for global opportunities
  • Identifies, implements and maintains country-specific payroll solutions
  • Support short-term & long-term international assignments and permanent international transfers
  • Serves as primary liaison with the immigration law firms that Piano uses in the US and around the world.

  • Additional Administrative Duties
  • Serves as primary HR department/Payroll department point person for cap table maintenance, options agreements, and collection of payments from those exercising options on Piano’s behalf.
  • Serves as the senior accounting liaison in the Western Hemisphere, responsible for some deposits of checks and approvals of payments pertaining to payroll
  • Maintains physical US payroll, tax, lease and audit files and serves as a Western Hemisphere liaison to state and federal revenue authories

Skills You Have

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, finance, business, or other relevant or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred payroll certifications (CPP, PHR, HRIP)
  • 10+ years of progressive experience overseeing the processing of multi-state and multi-country payrolls for large exempt and non-exempt workforce with hands on responsibilities.
  • Experience transforming a payroll function to maximize automation, scalability and cost effectiveness
  • Highly analytical, aptitude for quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and demands.
  • Excels in hyper-growth environments; versatile, capable of managing multiple projects and tasks.
  • Able to communicate effectively with teammates and various levels of management as well as external contacts.
  • Reliable, with a strong work ethic.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and maturity in handling confidential information.
