This role will be accountable and responsible for Pendo’s data privacy needs on a global basis. This will require providing data protection and privacy subject matter expertise, and advice and counsel to Pendo business units across all of its global locations.
This role will be responsible for ensuring compliance of Pendo’s products, services and operations with current and evolving global data privacy and AI regulations. This candidate will be asked to develop, communicate and partner internally with key stakeholders including Pendo’s product and engineering teams to ensure that data privacy features continue to be a strategic strength of our products and brand. As the company’s senior privacy counsel, you will be responsible for training Legal Department colleagues on aspects of contract negotiation regarding data privacy and other relevant regulations, and will be the internal owner of Pendo’s data privacy program and policies.This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate who is pragmatic, adaptable, energized by being customer-facing, comfortable working under business-driven deadlines, and willing to work collaboratively with the team to meet company-wide goals.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead a wide variety of legal activities related to all aspects of Pendo’s privacy program globally, which include contract negotiation, product development, marketing, vendor management, and evaluation of data processing activities, data incident management, and due diligence for business development activities.
- Architect practical, business-minded approaches to compliance across all aspects of global data protection laws.
- Work collaboratively with Pendo’s business and production teams, to develop and maintain privacy-by-design strategies that advance Pendo’s worldwide goals.
- Draft and negotiate agreements to assist Pendo’s commercial endeavors, including agreements for customers and vendors.
- Serve as a key subject matter expert and advisor to Pendo’s Legal Department and business units on global data privacy issues, AI regulations and other relevant regulatory developments impacting the business
- Partner across the organization to ensure a holistic governance, control, and management framework for data protection
- Contribute to the review and development of security procedures and other controls for the protection of personal data, in partnership with Pendo’s CISO, Pendo’s Data Protection Officer and security and engineering teams
- Coordinate with the Security team on annual privacy training including providing education, awareness, and expert advice to all employees regarding their obligations to comply with applicable data protection laws, including the GDPR, when processing personal data
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate and admitted to the bar in which position is located and in good standing, or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status).
- 9+ years of relevant data privacy experience, including prior in-house experience ideally in a B2B setting and/or law firm experience
- Expertise in global privacy and data regulatory laws and frameworks, including GLBA, CCPA, and GDPR.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PR around privacy, thought leadership, regulatory/policy environment, advocacy groups
- Demonstrated ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams
- Prior publication of relevant articles or training materials
- Excellent written communication and presentation skills; ability to communicate and help non-experts understand applicable regulations and requirements.
