Zenith is looking for an Operator/Maintenance Technician for our Joliet Terminal.
Job Description:
This position is a hybrid Operational and Maintenance role with responsibilities that will cross into both areas of the facility. The Operator/Maintenance Tech will be responsible for safely performing all tasks associated with the receiving, storing, blending, sampling, testing, and loading of combustible and flammable liquids. This position is critical in maintaining quality assurance, community relations, regulatory compliance, customer communications, and asset protection. All operations are done with safety and environmental compliance a top priority.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position requires the operator/maintenance tech to learn and perform all tasks in accordance with Zenith’s HSSE policies and procedures along with adhering to all local, state and federal regulations.
- Daily responsibilities include but are not limited to maintaining facility security, facility maintenance and general housekeeping.
- The operator/maintenance tech is responsible for accepting product deliveries, either via pipeline, truck, rail or barge and perform required sampling and testing of all products to maintain quality control.
- Maintain inventory control by physically gauging and sampling all receiving tanks before and after receipts.
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of the terminal loading/offloading racks and equipment associated with terminal operations and keeping the facility in good working order by utilizing preventative maintenance procedures.
- Operate, maintain, and repair, or assist in repairing, equipment associated with the bulk handling of petroleum liquids.
- Be able to work diligently and follow all safety requirements to prevent product contamination and avoid spills. Perform environmental and regulatory checks (eliminating, containing and reporting all leaks and spills).
- Centrifugal Pumps - Checks and changes oil in pumps; monitors bearings and oil temperatures; maintains coupling alignment records; monitors and repairs mechanical seals. Makes major repairs to pump bearings and rotating element.
- Tank Mixers - Services and lubricates gearboxes. Determines need for major/minor repairs, i.e., mechanical seal, shaft wear, overhaul when required.
- Valve Maintenance - Conducts PHMSA required inspections, periodic maintenance as required by manufacturer, performs basic maintenance functions as needed.
- Preventative maintenance, major/minor repairs as required to tanks, valves, engines, motors, mixers, piping, control panels, fencing, office, shop and storage buildings associated with pipeline, trucking, barge and ship terminals and related facilities.
- Troubleshooting of equipment across the facility and willing to learn different equipment sets in order to troubleshoot.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Be able to work in a variety of environmental conditions (extreme cold / heat) while wearing appropriate PPE, FR clothing, safety glasses and hard hat.
- Be able to comfortably climb 50’ storage tanks while wearing PPE.
- Manually open and close large valves several times per shift.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb etc. for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift normally up to 50 lbs. and occasionally more. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, lift, grasp and pull.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations (leaks, spills and fires) by implementing facility response plans.
- Be comfortable working around water, rail, and at heights.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers.
- Must have or be able to qualify for and obtain a TWIC Card.
- Must be HAZMAT Certified.
- Must either possess or be able to pass HAZWOPER training, HM126F training and annual updates.
- The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and a complete background check, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed. This position is subjected to random drug screening as well.
- The ability to work in stressful conditions, along with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and environmental conditions.
- Ability to accept supervision and direction and work effectively either in a team setting or alone.
- Individual must be available during non-work hours as required. Normal and extraordinary work circumstances may require, without notice, extended hours, weekend and/or holiday work.
- Regular attendance is mandatory.
- Basic computer and mechanical skills.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Basic troubleshooting skills.
- Strong communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to perform basic math.
- Previous pipeline experience with emphasis on mechanical/electrical is highly preferred. Knowledge of pipeline mechanical equipment maintenance and repair (i.e. engines, pumps valves, actuators, etc.).
- Comprehension of technical operational manuals and interpretation of equipment manuals and services notices.
- Should have a working knowledge of tolerances, clearances and related operating parameters of equipment. Basic electrical knowledge is preferred.
