Now celebrating its 15th year, The Cabaret seeks a Director of Advancement to join its dynamic team. The Cabaret presents best-in-class performers such as Tony Award-winning Broadway stars, Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalists, and renowned international artists in a unique and intimate, award-winning theatre that provides close proximity to world-class performers.
The Cabaret is a nonprofit performing arts organization dedicated to elevating and promoting the cabaret art form by entertaining, educating, and engaging audiences and artists through world-class performance. POSITION PURPOSE
As the lead fundraiser and as a member of the Executive Team, the Director of Advancement is responsible for helping to grow and strengthen all philanthropic programs and activities of The Cabaret, providing innovative leadership and strategic vision to further The Cabaret’s mission and ensure institutional growth. All employees are required to embrace and consistently practice our Core Values of “We Deliver the WOW,” “We Practice Radical Hospitality,” “We Welcome Everyone Here,” “We Invest in Each Other,” and “We do the Right Thing.”This position requires working a flexible schedule, including some nights, weekends, and extended hours as necessary.
The Cabaret presents an average of 38 evening productions annually. (With an average of two weekends per month) The average workday is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the week and 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. on show days.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This person will supervise a contract grant writer and collaborate with The Artistic Director and CEO, the Board of directors, and staff. As contributed revenue continues to grow, this person will have the opportunity to build a team. This position has the potential to grow into a management role.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Individual Giving
• Leads efforts to build deep and lasting relationships with individual donors, continuing to provide a strong foundation for annual operating support. • Identifies, engages, and retains donors. • Provides encouragement and incentives to move donors through the stewardship cycle with increasing giving levels. • Maintains a portfolio of major gift prospects.• Maintains excellent communications and provides compelling services, including donor parties, events, and recognition. • Grows the Christel DeHaan planned giving society to ensure the long-term growth of The Cabaret’s endowment.
• Manages capital campaigns. Maintains a portfolio of major gift prospects. • Ensures donors are acknowledged and recognized to strengthen financial support. Responsible for reviewing and controlling all gift acknowledgments, including receipts and thank you letters.
Sponsorships and Partnerships
• Manages and grows the three-season performance sponsorship program. Coordinates efforts with marketing and patron services staff. • Provides excellent sponsor pre- and post-show communication. • Attends sponsored performances and ensures stellar sponsor hospitality, recognition, and benefit fulfillment. Coordinates with the business and finance director concerning sponsor invoices and payments.
Grants
• Provides oversight of the department’s identifying sources and successfully securing and managing grants. • Ensures The Cabaret needs are matched with appropriate grant opportunities from private, city, state and national foundations. • Prioritizes funding opportunities and manages the grants master calendar. Supervises the grant application and reporting process with the contract grant/report writer, ensures timely staff data collection, and timely and accurate proposal submissions and reports.
Marketing and Communications
• In keeping with the Cabaret’s values of excellence and “radical hospitality,” manages donor communication, engagement and recognition collateral in partnership with the marketing manager. • Ensures that The Cabaret goes above and beyond to ensure donors feel valued and updated on mission and impact through such channels as thank you letters, brochures, campaign letters, pledge forms, sponsorship packages, website donor recognition, donor press releases, “donor spotlights” for eblasts and social media, annual impact PowerPoints, annual reports and more.
• Updates Donor research sites such as GuideStar annually.
Board and Staff Development
• Engages non-development staff to assist with donor cultivation and facilitate an organizational culture of donor stewardship and philanthropy. • Prepares fundraising reports and provides briefings and research on high-level current and prospective donors for the Artistic Director and CEO, and Board/committee leadership before meetings. • Prepares the Artistic Director and CEO for solicitation meetings, Board meetings, committee meetings, community meetings, etc. • Serves as a fundraising liaison to the Board and relevant committees (i.e., Executive, Development, Governance).
• Engages and utilizes the Board in development activities. Assists in identifying and cultivating future Board and committee members.
Systems
• Ensures systems are in place for tracking donor activity, providing timely communication, accurately recognizing donors, and maintaining The Cabaret’s standards for quality in its patron relations.• Maximizes the use of Bloomerang software by consistently tracking donor, sponsor, and community partner contacts.• Responsibly develops, manages, and evaluates departmental budgets and effective working relationships, workflow, and procedures with The Cabaret’s Business and Finance Director.• Collaborate with the Business and Finance Director to develop and produce regular analytic reports that synthesize the financial progress and trends of fundraising activities for the Artistic Director, CEO, and Executive Committee/Board.
External Affairs
• Serves as an ambassador and spokesperson for the organization as needed and articulates our mission to external constituents, partner organizations, and potential funders. • Exhibits interest in the community at large and the arts community: seeking out opportunities to become involved, foster relationships and create partnership opportunities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience. • Bachelor’s degree preferred. An advanced degree, fundraising certification, and ongoing professional development and training are desired.• A minimum of five years of successful direct experience leading the development function for not-for-profit organizations, with evidence of progressive employment history and a demonstrated knowledge of fundraising and sponsorship practices, management, and analysis.• A minimum of five years of staff management experience is required, with senior staff participation preferred.• Experience leading major gifts, capital campaigns, corporate giving relationships, federal and foundation grants, and planned giving efforts.• Demonstrated ability to develop deep and long-term relationships with major individual donors, resulting in significant annual gifts, multi-year capital pledges, and estate gifts; demonstrated ability to secure 7-figure and above gifts.• Proven and exceptional skills in engaging donors in the life of not-for-profit organizations; maintaining a personal and empathetic approach while realistically managing donor expectations; ability to facilitate relationships between donors and other team members, including the CEO and Board members.• Experience successfully organizing and motivating Board members, volunteers, committees, and staff members to cultivate and secure contributions.• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; management of time and multiple priorities; ability to comprehend, analyze, and report on financial data; ability to organize and manage donor stewardship plans, marketing, and communications; and balance attention between details and broad strategy.• Proven track record of establishing aggressive but achievable goals, creating plans and strategies, and successfully executing them to achieve those goals.• Proven history of successful teamwork, cooperation with co-workers, informal leadership across organizational divisions, and building a culture of philanthropy and marketing.
