Guild is seeking an attorney with strong subject matter expertise and experience in data privacy law, a relentlessly positive mindset and approach, and a track record of providing practical, business enabling advice and counsel within a high-growth, high culture environment. The successful candidate will be passionate about educating and enabling business stakeholders oriented toward proactive issue identification and problem-solving, and able to confidently articulate and advance a perspective, both internally and externally, while driving successful business outcomes that enhance Guild’s reputation as a trusted partner and steward of learner and employer data.
Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, the role will partner closely with Guild’s Product Managers, member- and client-facing teams, and colleagues within the legal and info-sec departments to educate and give legal guidance on privacy and regulatory issues.
As a Senior Legal Counsel, Privacy
, responsibilities include:
- Partner closely with our information security, compliance, product, marketing, coaching, HR, sales and other business teams on data privacy-related matters, emphasizing the importance of privacy while delivering practical and business-minded legal advice that enables successful business outcomes
- Support deal teams with proactive, responsive, and practical answers to privacy-related questions and creative solutions in the context of complex commercial negotiations
- Develop and automate processes to scale efficiencies and privacy controls
- Develop and iterate on privacy-related notices, policies, procedures and guidelines
- Evaluate the applicability of privacy laws and regulatory guidance on product features and service offerings
- Work with other members of the legal team to promote a culture of privacy in the Guild Partner Network and negotiate relevant agreements
- Evaluate the impact of U.S. and international legislative, regulatory, legal developments and industry guidelines involving privacy and security as applicable to Guild
- Work collaboratively on and lead cross-functional projects related to data governance, data protection and privacy by design
- Develop and deliver thoughtful and engaging privacy training
- Effectively manage outside privacy counsel
The ideal candidate will have:
Required Proficiencies:
- 8+ years of substantive privacy legal experience, preferably both in-house and at a law firm
- Experience with U.S. and international privacy and data protection laws, regulations and standards
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Ability to pragmatically weigh the risks and benefits of multiple potential courses within complex situations
- A reputation as a good peer, colleague, and partner
- Ability to quickly grasp technical and legal issues and explain them in comprehensible terms
- A good sense of humor and relentlessly positive attitude
- Ability to effectively communicate guidance on complex issues
- Experience with developing privacy and security policies and procedures
- Experience evaluating the sufficiency of privacy and security controls in business procedures
- Excellent business judgment, ability to make sound decisions, and a pragmatic approach to problem solving in order to enable strong business outcomes and adherence to applicable laws and regulations
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication, presentation and leadership skills
- Discretion to work on time sensitive, discrete, sensitive and highly critical issues
- Ability to establish relationships and communicate with all levels within the company, and to external stakeholders, in a way that enhances Guild’s reputation as a trusted partner and data steward

Total compensation for this role is market competitive, including a base salary range of $180,000-$210,000, as well as company stock options.
