Our consistent, organic growth plus a recent $70M investment has accelerated the expansion of our fantastic team and we are currently seeking to add a highly-skilled Vehicle Data Engineer. As a Vehicle Data Engineer, you will play a critical part in unlocking the power of vehicle data by specializing in Electronic Control Unit (ECU) communication and a variety of communication protocols including J1708, J1939 (Jbus) at both 250kbps and 500kbps baud rates, OBDII, J1850, K-Line, SW-CAN, MS-CAN, and ISO9141. You will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining systems that extract valuable insights from vehicle sensor data, enabling us to deliver next-generation telematics data.
This is a full-time, remote, US-based salaried position with travel to our NY HQ and/or customer sites.
What you will do:
- Design and develop efficient data pipelines for ingesting and processing raw vehicle data from various ECUs.
- Expertise in J1708, J1939 (Jbus) communication protocol, including message decoding, parameter identification, and signal processing, at both 250kbps and 500kbps baud rates.
- Possess a strong understanding of OBDII (On-Board Diagnostics) data standards and protocols.
- Familiarity with J1850, K-Line, SW-CAN (Single Wire CAN), MS-CAN (Medium Speed CAN), and ISO9141 communication protocols (a plus).
- Work closely with hardware and software engineers to ensure seamless integration of data acquisition systems into vehicles.
- Analyze and troubleshoot data quality issues, ensuring accurate and reliable data for downstream applications.
- Collaborate with Firmware Engineers to define data requirements and support the development of data-driven features.
- Stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in vehicle communication protocols and telematics technologies.
- Document technical processes and maintain clear and concise code for future maintenance and scalability.
- Become the subject matter expert (SME) on current and future automotive standards (OEM specific, SAE, ISO, etc) along with in-depth knowledge of Samsara’s ecosystem.
What you'll need to do it:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in vehicle data engineering or a similar role.
- Proven experience with J1708, J1939 (Jbus) communication protocols, including experience with both 250kbps and 500kbps baud rates.
- Strong understanding of OBDII data standards and protocols.
- Familiarity with J1850, K-Line, SW-CAN (Single Wire CAN), MS-CAN (Medium Speed CAN), and ISO9141 communication protocols.
- Experience with data pipelines, data ingestion tools, and data transformation techniques.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Willingness and availability to travel.
- Proficient in CAN data loggers or related data acquisition systems.
- Proficient in CAN analysis SW (Vector CANalyzer, Intrepid Vehicle Spy).

Benefits
We offer competitive compensation, commensurate with experience; $90-120k.
