The Center for Global Development (CGD) is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit policy research organization in Washington, DC and London, UK that focuses on the issues and institutions that are critical to inclusive development. Through rigorous empirical research and active engagement with the global policy community, we focus on the policy intersections of low- and middle-income countries and the governments, institutions, and corporations that can be partners in delivering greater progress.
Based in Washington, DC, the Vice President (VP) for Strategy and Research at the Center for Global Development (CGD) reports to the President of CGD. The VP is a thought partner to the President and critical leader in key areas, including developing a vision and strategy for CGD that responds to major shifts in the global development and geopolitical landscape; overseeing a research process that leads to the publication of rigorous, relevant, and high-impact products; and promoting analysis and bold thinking around major issues and trends.
In addition, the VP will have a strong record of research and publication, which they will continue as a Senior Fellow.
Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and management of portfolios related to substantive areas of expertise;
- Serve as senior/senior policy fellow, actively engaging in research and analysis related to CGD’s work;
- Support the President in facilitating the process to develop a future vision for CGD that is grounded in evidence, focused on innovative and creative policy outcomes, and responsive to the changing development and geopolitical landscape;
- Manage the development and execution of CGD strategic priorities and ensure that program goals and activities align with these priorities;
- Lead a research process that supports the development and delivery of both academic- and policy-oriented research that is creative, rigorous, and high impact, including through discussion and peer review by CGD and external experts
- Motivate and support research staff in pursuing bold ideas and translating evidence-based ideas into engagement that shapes policy outcomes;
- Drive collaboration and convenings that generate research on major cross-cutting issues and trends beyond specific sectors, including projects that work across CGD programs;
- Support the development and execution of strategic research partnerships, including those with academic institutions and organizations;
- Drive the development and delivery of strategic partnerships, in collaboration with program and policy outreach directors, to enhance CGD’s policy impact in a changing geopolitical and development landscape;
- Partner with the policy outreach directors to devise and implement strategies to elevate CGD’s public profile;
- Manage partnerships with funders, in collaboration with the senior director for institutional advancement, to build strong, trusting, and substantive long-term relationships and ensure there is coordinated oversight across grants and funding proposals;
- Work with the communications director to increase the profile and reach of CGD and its research and ideas, including through events, press, social media, etc.;
- Engage key stakeholders and the public to increase the profile and reach of CGD and its research; and
- Serve as a member of CGD’s leadership team and lead or participate in organizational initiatives, as assigned.
Salary range: $275,000 - $300,000. Pay commensurate with education, skillset, and experience.

The organization is working hybrid with all staff required to be in the office at least two days per week. CGD is registered to employ staff living in DC, Maryland, Virginia. Candidates must be able to declare a primary residence in one of these 3 locations.
