is seeking a Legal & Compliance Director. This position is responsible for ensuring AFB adheres to legal standards and in-house policies, particularly in relation to its franchising operations. This role involves managing legal risks, drafting, and reviewing legal documents, and ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. The Legal & Compliance Director will work closely with the Vice President of Legal and Franchise Compliance to support the company’s growth while maintaining the integrity of the franchise network and adhering to relevant laws and regulations.Note:  Hybrid work schedule with at least 2 days each week in our Plymouth, MI office

Essential functions


  • Legal Documentation and Review:
  • Monitor contract renewals, expirations, and obligations, proactively notifying relevant parties of upcoming deadlines or required actions.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate various legal documents including franchise agreements, and franchise related documents.
  • Ensure that all legal documents are accurate, complete, and comply with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Review development advertising materials for risk compliance.
  • Manage intellectual property matters, including trademarks and copyrights.
  • Compliance Management:
  • Lead the update of Franchise Disclosure Documents (FDDs) in compliance with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and other relevant authorities.
  • Assist Vice President to enforce franchise agreements in compliance with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and other relevant authorities.
  • Ensure all franchise operations comply with federal, state, and international laws and regulations.
  • Maintain compliance policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Maintain insurance requirements for various concepts.
  • Dispute Resolution:
  • Assist in managing litigation and dispute resolution processes, including working with external counsel.
  • Assist in handling Franchise Member disputes, ensuring fair and lawful resolutions.
  • Risk Management:
  • Monitor changes in laws and regulations affecting the franchise compliance and communicate these updates to relevant stakeholders.
  • Develop strategies to mitigate identified risks and implement necessary corrective actions.

  • Conduct team’s weekly and quarterly meetings
  • Attend Legal & Franchise Compliance weekly and quarterly meetings

Travel required


  • Possible travel to annual Franchise Member convention and franchise education events (IFA Legal Symposium)

Required education and experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, law, paralegal studies, or related field with 7+ years of experience and 3+ years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory compliance.
  • Proven track record of managing complex legal issues and leading compliance programs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

Preferred education and experience


  • Preferred experience in franchising or multi-brand environment.
  • Proven experience in franchise law a plus.
  • Certification in compliance or related fields (e.g., Certified Franchise Executive, Compliance and Ethics Professional).
