The HighPoint Technology Group team is looking for a Critical Systems Engineer in the Katy, TX area. In this role you will be part of a rapidly growing and changing data center environment. The Critical Systems Engineer is a member of the Global Network Operating Center (GNOC) team who will provide 2nd level support to NOC technicians and data center field operations. The engineer has expertise in electrical and/or mechanical systems as well as experience in mission critical infrastructure, including Generators, UPS Systems, HVAC Systems, Fire/Life Safety Systems, BMS Systems, and CMMS systems.
The Critical Systems Engineer is required to provide system expertise in the analysis and troubleshooting of critical system issues. The Critical Systems Engineer contributes to day-to-day data center operations by collaborating with NOC technicians, field operations teams, and vendors by providing preventative and corrective maintenance of critical systems. This includes, but is not limited to, problem management and managing the incident/emergency response and root cause analysis (RCA) processes. The engineer is also responsible for writing and/or approving work activities (MOPs) as well as supporting the creation and upkeep of standard and emergency operating procedures. The Critical Systems Engineer reports to the NOC Critical Systems Manager.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide 2nd level remote monitoring support of mission critical systems
- Collaborate with field operations directors, managers, and corporate engineering staff to resolve major electrical and mechanical data center issues
- Support PM Schedulers and field operations personnel with implementation and management of preventive and corrective maintenance programs at each data center
- Deliver support to all incident and emergency situations (SLA violations, equipment failure, process failures, etc.) and manage the root cause analysis (RCA) process
- Create and/or review and approve methods of procedures for support of preventive maintenance and corrective action tasks
- Support the process of creating and maintaining standard operating and emergency procedures (SOPs and EOPs)
- Some travel may be required
- Implement and manage field related projects as required
- Assist in identifying areas of improvement to existing facilities, particularly efficiency and PUE
- Help ensure compliance with applicable codes, requisitions, government agencies and directives as relates to building operations
- Participate in an on-call rotation as needed
- Carry out other duties as assigned by the NOC Critical Systems Manager or the Director of Global Data Center Support
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Familiarity with mission critical data center environments
- Extensive experience with critical electrical systems (UPS, Generator, Switchgear), mechanical systems (Air Handlers, Rooftop Units, pumps, Fans), fire alarm and suppression systems (FIKE), building control systems, and preventive maintenance programs
- Working knowledge of computer applications including DCIM and CMMS systems, Word, and Excel
- Strong prioritization, organization, and multitasking skills – must be able to switch quickly between projects or tasks
- IT awareness of servers, network, and peripheral equipment is a plus
- Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
- Able to lead and manage vendors, NOC technicians, and other resources as needed
Education and Experience
- 5 - 8 years of experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- Industrial Technology trade school certification or other verifiable training in a relevant technical field or equivalent practical experience with data center/critical facility, UPS Systems, Emergency Generators or Electrical Switchgear
Travel
