The Position:
Translational Genomics team is looking for an exceptional Sr. Scientist I in statistical genetics. Maze utilizes human genetics at all stages of drug development. You will design, lead and/or execute robust genetic association studies with the goal of identifying potential drug targets. You will also contribute to target validations and mechanism of action studies by integrating results from functional genomics experiments to complement allelic series grounded on known human genetic variants. You may also contribute to the clinical strategy for our programs by using human genetics to identify target engagement markers, secondary indications or the clinical trial population for advanced programs.
The role requires experience working with high-performing teams of scientists and strong analytical skills with an ability to collaborate with biologists and other data scientists. This position reports to the VP of Translational Genomics.
Your Impact:
- Leverage major scientific and technological advances, including investment in biobanks linked to large-scale human health databases, cutting-edge informatics platforms, breakthrough understanding of biological pathways and functional genomics capabilities to drive progress on the Maze pipeline.
- Identify and integrate data tools to expand analysis capabilities and maintain an up-to- date understanding of statistical genetics capabilities
- Perform and interpret human genetic analyses using public and internal data to identify new targets and therapeutic hypotheses
- Work in close collaboration with human genetics and functional genomics to integrate results from functional genomics studies with human genetics data for new target identification/prioritization
- Contribute to writing patents, reports and scientific publications
- Identify and manage internal and external collaboration opportunities in the human genetics space
Skills and Qualifications:
- Eager to engage in independent learning, with a strong ability to formulate unique hypotheses, design studies to test them, and drive their own scientific growth.
- Ph.D. with 2+ years of relevant experience in human genetics/statistical genetics/bioinformatics and the biologic interpretation of human genetic data
- Strong computational/statistical skills (demonstrated use of genetics tools, coding in Hail, python, R)
- Experience in the analysis of large-scale genomic association studies in complex genetic diseases including identifying and removing most common sources of technical noise using cloud-enabled tools.
- Well versed in the management, curation, and analysis of large (n>50,000) exome or whole-genome sequence datasets such as Geisinger, UK Biobank, Genes & Health, Finngen, TopMed, or others.
- A highly motivated disposition and desire to push new scientific boundaries
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to work within a team of statistical geneticists
About Maze Therapeutics
Maze Therapeutics is a biopharmaceutical company that is harnessing the power of human genetics to transform the lives of patients, with a focus on genetically informed therapies for common diseases, such as chronic kidney disease, . and seeks to focus expertise and resources towards underserved communities. Maze applies variant functionalization in tandem with advanced data science methods and a robust suite of research and development capabilities to advance a pipeline of novel precision medicines.
Maze has developed the Maze Compass Platform™, a proprietary, purpose-built platform to understand and integrate the critical step of variant functionalization into each stage of drug development. Utilizing the Maze Compass Platform™, Maze is building a broad portfolio of wholly owned and partnered programs. Its two lead programs are focused in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), a condition that impacts an estimated 37m individuals. The first program in CKD addresses a genetic subset of the common disease that has a disproportionate impact on the Black Community. Maze is based in South San Francisco.
