We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Optical Engineer to join our Optics team. You will be responsible for designing, prototyping, and testing optical and optomechanical systems and components for our innovative medical devices. You will work closely with an exceptional team of optical engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, microfabrication engineers, software engineers, neuroscientists, and clinicians dedicated to using cutting-edge technologies to make a meaningful impact on the lives of patients worldwide.
The ideal candidate for this position possesses exceptional practical skills, attention to detail, and is self-directed and motivated by challenging projects.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Design lenses and optical components for ophthalmic devices and wearable AR/VR type devices with Zemax
- Generate and finalize engineering specifications and error budgets for systems and subsystems in collaboration with team members
- Build, characterize, and refine complex optical systems and subsystems
- Apply rapid prototyping, testing, and analysis to assess feasibility of novel optical components
- Build test fixtures and develop metrology as needed
- Assemble and troubleshoot prototypes and beta-release medical devices
Key qualifications:
- 4+ years designing and testing complex optical systems
- Thorough understanding of geometrical optics, wave optics, and imaging systems
- Proficiency with optical design software (e.g., Zemax, Code V, FRED), including sequential and non-sequential ray tracing, tolerancing, and stray light analysis
- Proficiency building and characterizing optical systems
- Experience with lens design
- Proficiency with Python or C++
- High level of attention to detail and intrinsic motivation
- Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering or a related field. Advanced degree is a plus
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with clinical ophthalmic devices
- Solid understanding of vision science
- Experience with eye tracking technologies
- Proficiency with mechanical CAD and rapid prototyping
Salary/Pay Range:
For individuals hired to work in California, Science is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on geo-located salary bands.The base salary range for this full-time position is $140,000 - $170,000 annually + equity + benefits. Within the range, individual pay is determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please keep in mind that the equity portion of the offer is not included in these numbers.
