Atomic Machines is on Earth to radically advance humanity’s command over matter. Our mission is real-time bits-to-atoms manufacturing of anything at any scale, and to that end, we’re developing an entirely new digital micro-device manufacturing platform that is going to redefine how things are made, and do so while simultaneously enabling the rapid creation at any scale of new classes of machines – think medical micro-robotics, true lab-on-chip microfluidics, tunable antennas, ultrafast high-power and high-frequency RF switching devices and many more. The first device we are building with our platform has exceptional large-scale product/market fit and commercial traction, and we are pushing hard to share it with the world.
Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.
About the role:
We are seeking an experienced Robotics Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing team. This role will contribute to the foundational design of our novel robotic manufacturing platform by developing significant subsystems responsible for the precision manipulation of microscopic parts and assemblies. You will gain multidisciplinary experience across mechanical design, electrical engineering, vision, robotics controls, and manufacturing engineering while working as a part of a fast-paced cross functional team in an early startup.
What you’ll do:
- Design and develop mechanisms, end effectors, robotic axes, and systems that fit into a modular, complex robotic manufacturing platform.
- Subject designs and prototypes to rigorous testing that verifies performance down to the sub-micron level at statistically significant levels.
- Work cross-functionally on complex sub-systems of our automated fabrication platform to develop control algorithms, machine vision approaches, and closed-loop inspection and metrology functionalities.
- Create CAD models of parts and assemblies, BOMs (bill of materials), detailed drawings, and technical design documentation.
- Work collaboratively using PDM and PLM systems, project management tools, and G-Suite tools.
- Get hands-on with your designs, driving your work to completion with fabrication and assembly efforts leveraging our in-house lab and machine shop.
What you’ll need:
- 7-10 years of relevant industry experience, including design of electromechanical axes (including bearing selection, actuator specification, and encoder selection).
- Advanced proficiency with engineering fundamentals, design principles, significant use of CAD tools, and detailed drafting.
- Be a self-guided learner. The HW Platform team includes very experienced engineers who are always ready with ideas and pointers, however, to be successful you must be able to ascend learning curves quickly and with minimal direction.
- Easily accept and incorporate feedback from all avenues. Fast learning and willingness to adjust approach is critical for this role; the ideal candidate seeks out feedback continuously, both from other people and technical experimentation.
- Be a team player. Being motivated by team goals and willing to tackle whatever tasks are necessary (even if not glamorous) is a key aspect of this role.
- Be a maker. We expect all of our Mechanical Engineers to have a robust maker mentality and to have at least an understanding of CNC machining fundamentals, although ideally, they are an advanced maker with skills that extend beyond strong CAM and machining proficiency. Experience with fabrication is very valuable as it hones an intuitive understanding of materials.
- Excellent written & verbal communication and narrative writing skills.
- Be a self-starter and finisher.
- Minimum B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
Bonus points for:
- Experience with high vacuum systems, airlocks and load locks.
- Experience with laser and optical systems.
- Experience with precision engineering fundamentals.
