What’s the role?
We’re looking for a creative powerhouse with a keen eye for detail and a passion for innovation to help us evolve the look and feel of our interactive educational products. As a Senior Artist, you’ll collaborate closely with writers, product designers, and creative strategists to develop illustrated and animated content that educates, engages, and entertains our users. We’re looking for artists with a strong point of view who can help us define (and articulate to others) the visual qualities that help our products stand out in an industry plagued by stock imagery and Corporate Memphis. You’ll produce work ranging from early concept sketches to high fidelity animation, and you’ll need to be an expert (or hungry to become an expert) in many complementary disciplines: layout, typography, color, composition, and motion design. You’ll also need to be a skilled communicator who can easily sell your ideas to teammates, stakeholders, and users.
We’re a design team full of bridge builders who believe that storytelling and evangelizing are critical parts of the creative process.
What you’ll do to be successful
1) Create compelling illustrated and animated content for our product, marketing, and communications teams
- Distill complex ideas down to clear, concise visuals
- Bring personality and playfulness to everything you create, and find ways to make boring benefits stuff feel interesting and alive
- Create everything from sketches to storyboards to polished final illustrations and animations
- Be able to articulate your choices to team members and stakeholders, and invite feedback throughout your process
We'll measure success by internal and external stakeholder feedback, research and user testing, and product success metrics.
2) Collaborate with Writers, UI Designers, Motion Designers, Product Managers, Engineers, and other team members throughout all stages of development
- Drive the development of visual concepts through collaborative ideation and brainstorming
- Work with writers to brainstorm concepts and shape scripting so that our words and our art achieve a beautiful, impossible symbiosis
- Collaborate closely with Motion Designers to ensure that animations are a successful expression of your storyboards
- Work with UI Designers, Engineers, and other team members to ensure that art is implemented as intended
- Coordinate and manage external contractor resources as needed, ensuring work is high quality and on brand
We'll measure success by rework/revision time, work completed on time and on budget.
3) Define and evolve our style guidelines and evangelize them across products
- Document the style and implementation of art used in our products to maintain our design system
- Grow the design system as new features and art elements are created
- Optimize the design process to increase efficiency and decrease production time
- Provide input as a cross-functional team member to define and evolve the overall iterative design process
We'll measure success by art coverage within internal design system, design system adoption and implementation across product teams, process refinement and innovation.
