POSITION OVERVIEW


The Cascade PBS’s mission is to inform and inspire our community to make the world a better place.Our vision is to be the most essential and relevant media organization in the region.The fellowship is a twelve-month program designed to jumpstart the career of an early career professional at a time when local    journalism is both increasingly vital and threatened. The fellow will also help create journalism that is representative of the communities we serve, while demonstrating PBS AND CPM’s values of integrity, community, innovation and diversity.The emerging journalist fellow will be placed with our audience engagement team, focusing on supporting and promoting vital reporting with impacted communities in an ever-changing digital landscape, whether through newsletters, social media, community outreach or other avenues.

Though this role

will not


focus primarily on reporting, the fellow will also work with journalists throughout the editorial team, developing skills in written, audio and video storytelling. Through this work, the fellow will gain a better understanding of the collaborative process required to produce compelling and impactful journalism across various media, while demonstrating Cascade PBS’s values of integrity, community, innovation, and diversity.The fellow will have a start date of January 6th, 2025, and will finish on December 19th, 2025.

Seattle WA - Must live in WA State, hybrid schedule that requires days onsite each week with other days remote

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES


  • Learn the ins and outs of how audience engagement and digital content support journalism, including newsletter writing, social media strategies, data graphics and web management.
  • Assist the digital content manager and newsletter editor with engagement duties, including social media posts, headline    writing or newsletter production. 
  • With the guidance of the digital content manager, act as the engagement lead on at least one newsroom-related project, creating an audience engagement promotional campaign.
  • Learn how to read, report, and analyze data, including how analytics can impact reporting and newsroom strategies.
  • Assist and shadow other journalists in the production of original enterprise journalism.
  • Join regular planning and development meetings.
  • May pursue occasional reporting opportunities on other assignment desks (news, investigative)
  • With guidance from manager, work with the editorial staff and others to help identify potential audio and video storytelling opportunities.
  • Help bring fresh, innovative ideas to engage new readers, whether through social media, community outreach or other measures 
  • Participate in training sessions. 
  • Collaborate with other team members to foster a positive and productive culture and contribute toward the overall growth of Cascade PBS.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES


  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a hybrid environment.
  • Proven interest in and basic understanding of journalism
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment 
  • A proven and demonstrated understanding of journalistic ethical standards and practices.
  • Ability to understand, relate to and communicate the perspectives of diverse communities, historically disadvantaged populations or economically marginalized communities or individual

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


  • Degree in Journalism, Communication, Creative Writing, or related field experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with peers; some experience organizing and managing multiple priorities, and in developing and managing projects.
  • Working knowledge of Content Management Systems
  • Working knowledge of word processing platforms
  • Working knowledge of AP style 
  • Experience working in email management platforms is preferred.
  • Previous experience, education or understanding of audience engagement’s role in journalism is preferred, but not required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time.
  • Ability to type on a keyboard for long periods of time.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
